Laura Smith was not only the youngest, but also the only female working as an apprentice for contractors Wyse Power on the 2012 Olympics site in Stratford. The seventeen year old relishes the challenge of working in a predominantly male environment and exudes a high level of confidence for her young age.
NVQ Certificate in Performing Engineering
Operations (level 1) This is an EAL NVQ qualification where you will learn the basics of electrical installation and plumbing. It’s a 1 year, full-time course which covers, health and safety, lighting systems, power systems and how to use materials of the trades. Most of the course is practical-based, but there are a number of written assignments to be completed.
Entry requirements: College interview and assessment.
Next possible steps: Employment or higher level courses.
Electrical Installation City &
Guilds 2330 (level 2) Gain technical knowledge and achieve a recognised qualification to enable you to work in the electrical industry. The course covers practical installation work, practical electronics, IEE (Institute of Engineering and Technology) regulations and electrical science and technology.
Entry requirements: Internal assessment and interview and level 2 equivalent in maths, English and science.
Possible next steps: City & Guilds 2330 part 2 (level 3).
Electrical Installation City &
Guilds 2330 (level 3) You will gain a higher level of technical knowledge and if successful, will achieve a recognised qualification. This will allow you to work in the electrical industry. Level 3 is the minimum qualification required to be graded as an electrician.
Entry requirements: Level 2 electrical installation course.

Apprenticeship in Installing Electrotechnical Systems
and Equipment This is a 3 year course, where you will complete the City & Guilds 2357 Diploma in Electrical Installation. The course covers practical installation work, IEE (Institute of Engineering and Technology) regulations and electrical science and technology, health and safety and environmental technologies.
Entry requirements: You must be employed within the electrical industry, as you will study one day a week at HCC and work onsite for 4 days a week. There is also a College interview and assessment.
Possible next steps: Team leader / supervisory status within the trade.
