Brickwork


Jamie Emmett (pictured) is confident he can build on his success after winning a top medal in a regional construction skills competition. The Level 3 student from Stamford Hill won a gold medal in his trade at the Apprentice Skills Showcase which recognises the talents of construction trainees from across London.


Entry 3 in Brickwork, Carpentry and Painting (Skills


for Working Life) This is an entry level vocational Diploma based in Brickwork, Carpentry and Painting and Decorating. You will have the chance to work in the Brickwork, Carpentry and Joinery and Painting workshops. This is to ensure a greater understanding at level 1 in either of the chosen trades. Functional Skills in maths and English are built into the crafts alongside the underpinning trade knowledge, health and safety and ICT. The course is designed to help you settle into college life and progress is based on strong tutorials and personal development.


Entry requirements: College interview and assessment – no formal qualifications are necessary.


Next possible steps: Brickwork Level 1 Diploma, Painting and Decorating Level 1 Diploma, or Carpentry and Joinery Construction Diploma Level 1.


Bricklaying Diploma (level 1) This course provides you with the basics of bricklaying construction and helps to develop your practical experience and knowledge to prepare you for a career in brickwork. The course is fundamental to becoming a bricklayer and completion of the course is necessary to progress onto the level 2 Bricklaying Diploma.


Entry requirements: College interview and assessment.


Possible next steps: Brickwork Construction Diploma (level 2).

Bricklaying Diploma (level 2) This course continues from the level 1 course. It further prepares you for a career in bricklaying. A practical task will be assessed to industrial standards and will involve more detailed brickwork, ranging from decorative brickwork, arches and bungalow construction. You will only achieve the course if all theory and practical assignments are completed to national standards.


Entry requirements: Brickwork Foundation Construction Award (level 1) or Brickwork Diploma (level 1) and College interview and assessment.


Possible next steps: Brickwork Diploma (level 3) and/or employment.


Bricklaying Diploma (level 3) This course is the next step from the level 2 course. It covers arches, decorative panels, string courses and circular and curved work. You’ll also get an in-depth knowledge of site operations, site programmes and learn to co-ordinate yourself and others to construct complex masonry details.


Entry requirements: Brickwork Intermediate Construction (level 2) or Brickwork Diploma (level 2) and College interview and assessment.


Possible next steps: You will be qualified to progress into employment as a bricklayer and foreman after 3 years’ site practice plus further education in building studies/HNC.
