Adam Connolly (pictured) proved to be one of the best in London at his trade after winning top honours in the regional heat of SkillBuild 2011, the UK’s biggest skills competition. The Level 2 student, competed against other trainees from across the capital to win first place in the Joinery category. He earned the chance to represent London at the national finals in Leeds.

Carpentry and Joinery Construction Diploma


(level 1) You will learn about: hand tools and their maintenance, basic joints and how to cut them, how to use portable power tools, how to work safely and the building team and how it works together. You will also learn how to communicate and work effectively with others. The course includes basic building methods and construction technology. You’ll learn how to quantify materials required for the work you will be expected to do and how to safely move and store materials.


Entry requirements: GCSE grade C in English and Maths or Level 1 in communication and application of number, plus a college assessment and interview. You need high motivation as 100% attendance is required, as is a desire to work in the construction industry.


Possible next steps: Construction Diploma Level 2 in either site carpentry or bench joinery.


Bench Joinery Construction


Diploma (level 2) You will learn how to store and handle materials, erect basic working platforms (tower scaffolds) and work effectively and safely as a team. You will also learn how to set out and make routine joinery products including doors, frames, stairs and fittings.


Entry requirements: Successful completion of NVQ level 1 or Foundation Construction Award / Carpentry and Joinery Diploma (level 1).


Possible next steps: Bench Joinery Diploma (level 3).


Site Carpentry Construction


Diploma (level 2) This course continues from the level 1 diploma and is for students who wish to specialise in the site carpentry aspect of the carpentry and joinery trades. You will learn how to store and handle materials, erect basic working platforms (tower scaffolds) and work effectively and safely as a team. You will also learn how to hang doors, fix architrave and skirting, fix door frames and linings, encase services, lay joisting and floors, and erect trussed rafter roofs.


Entry requirements: Successful completion of NVQ level 1 or Foundation Construction Award / Carpentry and Joinery Diploma (level 1).
