FinanCial support


Courses are free for 16 to 18 year olds. Adults can take advantage of flexible learning and various funding schemes to continue their education. Studying for a new qualification may actually cost less than you think and, while it may cost a little to begin with, it will be a great long term investment. getting a new qualification could increase your annual salary by £2,000- £3,000+.


You may be eligible for financial support in the form of grants. education maintenance allowance (ema), adult learning grants (alg), professional and Career Development Loans.


Here is a summary of the most common types of financial support accessed by our students. You can get further information from Student Services or the Advice Centres.


EMA – Education Maintenance Allowance


ema is an award of up to £30 per week given by the government to students who:


• are aged 16-18 at the start of September


• have income or parental income of less than £30,810


get an application form by calling the Learner Support Helpline on 0800 121 8989 (7am-8pm), online at www.direct.gov.uk/ema or asking at Student Services.


ALG – Adult Learning Grant


alg is an award of up to £30 per week given by the government to students who:


• are aged at least 19 years old at the start of September


• are earning £19,513 or less if they are single or £30,810 or less if they are married or live with someone as if they are married.
