Slimline LED lights launch
Fill-Lite By David Fox
A new range of LED soft lights has been designed by a Hollywood cinematographer frustrated by both bulky, power- hungry traditional soft lights and the technical shortcomings of first-generation LEDs.
The Fill-Lite family of ultra-thin modular lights are composed of one or more 60x60cm light squares and use peripherally- mounted LEDs and a special diffusion screen to provide softer, more uniform lighting than first-generation backlit LED panels, says the maker. The edge mounting enables
Fill-Lite’s squares to be thinner than other LED systems (at just
1.25cm thick), and they use specially selected LEDs for better colour quality.
“On-location shooting and photography in tight spaces has needed a compact, low-power and high-quality lighting solution for a long time,” said Owen Stephens, SOC, Fill-Lite’s founder and president. “Frustrated with the shortcomings of other LED-
Cutting edge design: Stephens designed the Fill-Lite to be thinner than normal LED lights
based soft lights, I decided to design my own.” Stephens’ products are available in three formats (each with 5500K or 3500K models): the Fill-Lite 200, 60cm x 67.5cm including mount, which uses a single square; the Studio model, for larger area lighting, using four squares (which divide for easy packing), at 127.5cm x 147.5cm; and the modular Wall model, which allows users to add as many units as necessary, where each square can be tilted in two directions for optimal illumination of complex subjects. Fill-Lite showed prototypes at NAB and Cine Gear, but the production versions at IBC have been upgraded so that DMX, WiFi (controllable via an iPad app), and battery connections can be added using a quick slide-in process. The units also weigh less since switching from steel to aluminium for non-load bearing surfaces. 11.D21
announcements at IBC, we are now focusing our entire arsenal of new and existing DivX video technologies and the proven device Certification programme on accelerating HEVC adoption.” At CES in January, Rovi announced an end-to-end High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC/H.265) development program designed to enable companies participating in the digital video value chain to take
advantage of the latest compression standard to reduce storage and bandwidth costs, and deliver an optimised viewing experience. At IBC, Rovi is demonstrating what it describes as significant progress with a range of product introductions and updates, as well as new industry collaborations. Also being demonstrated by the company is DivX Plus Streaming, Rovi’s advanced adaptive streaming format, in action featuring an HEVC profile. Offering features such as 5.1-channel surround sound, multi-language subtitles and audio tracks, and DivX DRM, DivX Plus Streaming is being used to showcase the streaming of protected HEVC content to mobile devices. 5.A31
