theibcdaily Saturday 14.09.13 121 Delivering the ‘perfect client’ STB Opinion
The manufacturer has taken a new approach to STB system-on-a-chip solutions to serve dynamic pay-TV operations explains Patrick Henry, president & chief executive officer, Entropic
Service providers, regardless of pay-TV segment, are looking for the Holy Grail in subscriber acquisition – which often comes down to the velocity at which new services and applications can be enabled on set-top boxes (STB) and other connected devices throughout the home. In their search, many service
providers have begun the transition from traditional set-top box/personal video recorder (STB/PVR) set-ups to a gateway/client network architecture, where protected and premium entertainment is streamed from the main gateway to each client device in the home. This gateway/client approach is changing the way operators are thinking about, and distributing, content in the home. Leading global pay-TV operators
including Comcast, UPC/Liberty Global, DIRECTV and DISH Network, to name a few, are moving toward the gateway/client deployment model with the Comcast Reference Design Kit (RDK), UPC Horizon platform, Genie service and Hopper/Joey model,
respectively. And these service providers are the first in a long-line of other operators that will jump on the bandwagon to launch these types of platforms – as they lower cost and enable faster time-to-market for advanced interactive and social TV services. Recognising this macro dynamic
early, Entropic took a new approach to how it designs its STB system-on-a- chip (SoC) solutions. The company placed a tremendous effort on creating the ‘perfect client’ by driving innovation from its SoC architecture, thinking like a consumer and taking cues from the mobile app world to best understand what features consumers want, and more importantly – want first. Specifically, Entropic’s advanced
SoCs leverage core development work from the mobile and IP worlds and bring these insights to the STB platform. By using the ARM processor, which is the predominant processor in the mobile world, Entropic can enable rapid innovation in the RDK ecosystem. We also added video decoding,
advanced security/conditional access features and has integrated open- source elements, such as HTML5 and DLNA Customer Video Profile (CVP) applications into its SoC to transform next-generation IP-Client devices, today. Additionally, Entropic designed its Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) 2.0 solution, which is bundled with its powerful SoC, to offer the highest MAC throughput to enable the most reliable whole-home connectivity backbone from the gateway to all client devices in the home. With backward interoperability to
MoCA 1.0 and 1.1 devices, the MoCA 2.0 solution enables dependable streaming of data services and IP video throughout a gateway/client architected home. An early licensee of the IP-RDK,
Entropic is at the centre of the gateway/client movement, developing ‘perfect’ client solutions that empower pay-TV service providers to deliver first- to-market advantages that optimise the consumer TV viewing experience. Meeting Room G106/G107
