With IBC2013 now well underway I would like to add my warm welcome to what is, officially, our biggest exhibition ever. With the largest amount of space yet sold, I am proud to say that IBC has been embraced by the industry as the place to experience technology at first hand and learn from world-class authorities about the context in which it is applied.


Customers we have spoken to over the course of the year have, of course, had to consolidate resources which have necessarily put their margins under pressure. But they are also saying that they believe in IBC and that IBC will


deliver on its promise. In return, we recognise our responsibility to ensure that we do.


IBC uniquely encapsulates the crossroads where technology


and creativity meet across all fields of electronic media. The international assembly of speakers at the conference truly use IBC as a platform to set the industry’s agenda and speak to the market. We maintain a strong commitment to educate the industry as represented by our investment in the Rising Stars programme. Perhaps most importantly, we listen to our audience all of the time and adapt each show to improve the experience for everyone. So what can visitors expect at IBC2013? World Cup Final in 4K Sony By Adrian Pennington


“4K is not just ready to be deployed, it is actually happening,” said Katsunori Yamanouchi, VP of Sony Professional Solutions Europe, announcing that the FIFA World Cup Final in Brazil next year will be produced in 4K.


Just the final match at this stage is to be captured in the format to entice broadcasters to take the feed. Public viewing venues and screenings at cinemas are also being discussed by FIFA with the decision on the total number of matches to be shot and aired in 4K dependent in part on the outcome of the World

3D was marked by its distinct absence from the Sony press conference although FIFA has not ruled out producing in the format thanks to interest from China’s CCTV among others.


“At IBC2012 Sony announced its technical collaboration with FIFA to produce the 2014 tournament in HD,” said FIFA TV director Niclas Ericson. “The World Cup Final in 4K is the next natural evolution. We needed to be sure we had the technology that could deliver the trial this


commercial impact, and added value events from ground- breaking technical firsts to the chance to sit in a comfortable chair and watch a movie. We have designed and evolved a number of special Feature Areas too, including IBC Workflow Connexions in Hall 9 (an elite networking club for 1000 workflow professionals), and the Game Zone in Hall 5 which, we hope, is not only hugely enjoyable but also a reminder that games are increasingly important to the way we interact with narrative and devices. The third annual IBC Leaders’ Summit, which took place on Thursday, enabled the most influential and visionary people at the very top of the industry to engage in candid discussion about strategic issues affecting their business. Importantly, the majority of these leaders continue their stay at IBC and visited the Conference and the Exhibition on special guided tours. It is of considerable interest for these very senior

Because this live production system can also be used to shoot HD – by offering HD cut outs from 4K cameras, downconversion to HD or high frame rate sequences for slow motion.” Sony has bolstered its existing 4K line with two new NXCAM camcorders, the NEX-FS700RH and the NEX-FS700R. Both models feature a 4K Exmor Super35 CMOS sensor and enable 4K/2K recording on an external recorder. Blackmagic Design yesterday unveiled its ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K, a new Ultra HD live production switcher with 6G-SDI technology for $2495. Blackmagic’s Bob Caniglia reported that it will become the top end of the company’s current switcher products, joining the ATEM Production Studio 4K (which will be reduced in price to $1695). The new model adds features including 10 independent 6G-SDI


inputs each with frame sync, built in DVE with zoom, scale and rotate, four upstream chroma keyers, three independent aux outputs with front panel control and a larger media pool that holds both still frame graphics as well as motion video clips. It lets customers connect up to 10 SD, HD or Ultra HD 4K video cameras, disk recorders and computers for live production. The media pool on the ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K allows 32 still frames with fill and key in Ultra HD as well as 180 frames of

full motion clips with fill and key Ultra HD. When switched to 1080p or 1080i video formats the media pool allows 720 frames of full motion clips.


“With new Ultra HD televisions hitting the market, consumers are gearing up for an amazing transition into a cinema viewing experience in the home.
