By Ian McMurray The world’s first carrier-grade implementation of a universal player able to support all kinds of video streaming is the claim made by SoftAtHome for its SOP6 product release. This is, according to the company, a major milestone in the evolution of the digital home, offering broadband operators and broadcasters a single player for accessing all streamed video from any network in a single STB device. “We are proud to be first to integrate all available standard streaming technologies used for broadcast, broadband and OTT content delivery in a single universal video player,” said Michel Degland, CEO at

Sommer Cable By Will Strauss

Sommer Cable has added a watertight cable series to its product range. Useful as an addition to underwater filming technology, Aqua Marinex cables feature a PUR jacket that is both resistant to salt water and microbes, allowing lines to be installed in water depths between 50m and 100m. A special protective sleeve

prevents moisture intrusion and provides the necessary pressure compensation required in deep water while a UV-resistant and sand- repellent jacket surface allows these new cables to also be used outdoors on boats, or for inshore installations. Currently several audio, video and network cable lines are being made available. Custom-made items can also be ordered depending on quantity. Sommer Cable says that

the introduction of the Aqua Marinex range follows ‘increasing requests, from customers, particularly in the professional PA sector. 9.B31

SoftAtHome. SoftAtHome now supports

all three principal adaptive streaming technologies for video delivery over the internet and best effort IP networks, having recently integrated the

new DASH open industry standard.

SoftAtHome was also early to support the two principle existing streaming technologies, Microsoft Smooth Streaming and Apple

HLS (HTTP Live Streaming), in its SOP5 software.

The addition of DASH to complete the adaptive streaming portfolio was the final move needed to bring out the Universal Player, says the

company, since SoftAtHome already supported all the key linear broadcast technologies. The SoftAtHome SOP6 platform has also integrated a double security support for CAS (Conditional Access Security) and DRMs, enabling service providers to meet the strict protection requirements of premium content rights holders. 5.B30
