Beyond HD and into Ultra-HD

Following the first tentative blossoming in previous years, there is no doubt that 4K/Ultra- HD has been at the centre of attention at both CES and NAB this year. consumer electronics manufacturers, who started the fire in the first place, continue to push for higher resolution devices and larger displays. But within the industry the discussion has gone several steps further with intense debates about higher frame rates, wider colour space or extended dynamic range. And while the professional conversation continues, Ultra- HD has reached the consumer domain, leaving the end user with a vast offer of Ultra-HD devices (although still relatively pricey) and the hard facts are that there is almost no native Ultra-HD content to go along with these new toys. Building upon ‘The Great Debate: Do we really need to go beyond HD?’ this session will very much take the consumer perspective in taking a look at how more, faster and better

Deutschland was one of the first broadcasters to publically announce its commitment towards the launch of Ultra-HD services. Over the past 12 months the German pay-TV operator has added authority to that pledge in the form of several Ultra-HD test productions, the support of respective standardisation efforts, and the analysis of potential new concepts for Ultra-HD.

Deutschland has partnered with several companies representing the end-to-end chain to create an Ultra-HD demo live on air, which represent the current status of the development towards a regular service. Ultra- HD content produced by Sky Deutschland, Sony Pictures and


3net, tied together in a short trailer to hint all the ingredients of a future Ultra-HD service (eg sports, movies and


documentaries) and enriched with some educational elements to illustrate the added value of Ultra-HD, has been put live on air by satellite operator SES. In taking a step further


compared to similar approaches at IBC last year, this time content has been encoded in HEVC by Harmonic and is received by a prototype Ultra- HD receiver presented by Pace. The result can be seen during the session on several Sony Ultra HD/4K displays in different screen sizes.
