Helping Elks Build Stronger Communities Scholarship Winner Robert Rossman R


OBERT ROSSMAN is a 2008 $4,000 ENF Most Valuable Student scholarship recipient sponsored by the Lakewood, Ohio, Lodge. A born musician, Robert feels lucky to have been able to study recording arts at Indiana University Bloomington. “Record- ing fascinates me,” says Robert, “because there are an infinite number of ways you can manipulate sound. Every time you work on something, it’s completely different.” Robert, who graduated from Indiana University in De- cember 2011, feels that his ENF Most Valuable Student scholarship made him more conscious of the community

while he was in college. “Being an Elks scholar is an honor,” says Robert. “Being involved with the Elks has also made me realize the importance of community. Throughout col- lege, in the spirit of the Elks, I volunteered at Big Brothers Big Sisters and worked for an organization that delivers food to elderly people in the Bloomington community.” Robert’s ENF scholarship also made it possible for him to expand his education in other ways as well. While at Indi-


ana University, he obtained a grant that, along with some creative fund- raising, allowed him to spend part of his time last summer producing and recording music for a full-length album for his friend, Ari Kaplan. After the music was recorded, Robert and Ari rented a recording studio and mixed and mastered the album themselves. This hands-on experience was the highlight of the endeavor as far as Rob- ert was concerned. The studio the pair rented gave Robert the opportunity to work with new tools and equipment and to expand his knowledge of the recording process. The album, Popular

People, by Ari Kaplan, was released on December 13, 2011, under Robert’s own record label. After spending the holi- days with his family, Robert moved to Los Angeles to work in film and television audio post-production, but he will continue to produce albums on the side. ■
