DUCT SIZING FOR ADD-ON TECH TIP
Many duct systems are under sized. Many become undersized because air conditioning was added to an existing heating system without verifying that the duct work could handle the additional CFM required for air conditioning.
Typically, duct work connected to an existing “heating only” system is insufficient to handle air conditioning requirements. Adding air conditioning to a duct system designed for “heating only” may result in system performance problems and prema- ture system failure.
When estimating an “ADD-ON’ air conditioning installation, be sure to determine the existing duct system sizing is suf- ficient to handle the increased CFM required for air condition- ing, before offering an estimate.
If the existing duct system is not of adequate size, supply/re- turn duct, registers and grilles need be added to ensure proper system operation.
Air conditioning duct systems require anywhere from 20% to 40% increase in size depending on the tonnage installed and the existing duct sizes.
