Scotland-based travel agency prides itself on nurturing its employees and promoting from within
Barrhead Travel is Scotland’s leading travel company with more than 1,000 employees in over 70 locations across the UK. As well as a string of business awards to our name, we’re also proud to have been listed in Best Companies to Work For, as voted for by our people. Barrhead Travel is part of
Travel Leaders Group, one of North America’s largest travel companies. While we still operate with our own identity and values, this ownership opens doors to industry- leading technology and exciting new markets, and offers significant progression opportunities for our people. At Barrhead Travel we’re passionate about people.
TOUCH BASE
The development of our employees is something we nurture to ensure everyone is equipped to take up as many opportunities as possible.
Career progression
Barrhead Travel’s president is a good example. Jacqueline Dobson started as a sales consultant and has herself experienced the progression the company can offer. She says: “We are committed
to growing our people and aim to ensure 75% of vacancies are filled through promotions. We believe our people are our future and so we work hard to ensure each employee is fed with sufficient support and inspiration throughout their Barrhead Travel journey.

“Our most recent initiative
is the introduction of our Wellness Steering Champions. Each champion will undergo mental health first-aid training to lead Wellness Steering Surgeries, which will open channels of conversation and promote a healthy workplace. “Another example of how we
nurture our teams is through our worldwide educational programme which allows teams to travel to incredible destinations across the globe.”
Apprenticeship scheme
At Barrhead Travel, we are proud providers of a modern apprenticeship programme which acts as an excellent gateway to many career paths. Apprenticeships can range from sales to IT, marketing to finance, and everything in between. The scheme combines on-the-job training with mentored study, resulting in a specialist qualification in your chosen field.
Gary Speirs, cruise business development manager “I left school at 18 and struggled with choosing the right career path. I was introduced to Barrhead Travel through friends. The thought of working in travel was exciting and I knew the industry would be bursting with innovation which would allow me to use my creative streak. “I began as a modern
apprentice and worked in various departments before taking up my current role as business development manager looking after the river cruise sector. I have travelled to many destinations in Europe and Asia, all through work. “There is also opportunity
to further develop yourself academically; I have gained additional qualifications in business administration and I am currently completing a CMI Level 3 First Line Management course.”
