from the crowd Beyond qualifications and experience in the travel industry, there are a number of other skills and
experiences that could help make you a memorable candidate who shines above other applicants. “The more additional skills and experiences you can bring to complement your studies, the more employable you will potentially be,” says Claire Muge of Travel Trade Recruitment. Here we highlight a few examples that could help you stand out from the crowd.
Soft skills
‘Soft skills’ is a phrase that’s often heard when it comes to job requirements. These are
extremely valuable, says Carla Ferrero of career consulting company Ni-Cons, with problem-solving and thinking out of the box among some of the
most desired. “It’s an industry where you have to be proactive,” she says. “You need to be able to work under pressure.” As with other scenarios in the application process, citing examples of when you’ve been able to demonstrate these skills will help your case.
Previous employment
If you’re taking your first steps in the travel industry, it’s likely some of your previous job roles will be unrelated to travel. Don’t be deterred by this, says Ni-Cons’ Carla Ferrero. “For me, to get a CV with only education experience is much less valuable than someone who includes the detail that while they were studying they also worked as a waitress,” she says. These types of job show commitment, communication skills and the ability to juggle multiple things at once.
Language skills
Language skills are always likely to come in useful in the travel industry. Although a second language isn’t necessary for the majority of travel roles, if the company you’re applying to has international branches, or the opportunity to travel abroad for work, it may be a huge asset. “More and more roles require language skills, so this is definitely an advantage for many potential employers,” says Claire Muge of Travel Trade Recruitment.
International experience “First-hand knowledge of the places that
you will be selling is invaluable to a company,” says Jose Cofone of Domex Recruitment. Many education institutions actively encourage studying abroad. This experience immerses you in a different culture and education system, and allows you to develop other skills, such as independence and confidence. Even holidays you have taken with family, friends or by yourself can work in your favour. Knowledge of those destinations could help you in your application.
