Two million people can’t be wrong The UK hospitality and tourism industry boasts a workforce

of over 2.2 million people. Restaurants and hotels in particular have had massive growth, and the best thing is you’re definitely not stuck for choice with a career in either sector. Waiting staff, sommeliers, event co-ordinators and food and beverage managers all play a part in creating the welcoming hospitality experience.

Who can help? How can I be sure it's for me?

Charlotte Horler, front of house manager at Red Carnation Hotels and a Springboard ambassador, explains the variety on offer

Can young people really ‘try before they buy’? Yes, of course. If you do try before you buy, then there is much more opportunity to find your passion early and start developing it in your own personal style. Many companies offer training and development programmes that cover more than one department, allowing up-and-coming talent the chance to find their perfect home within hospitality.

How does a work placement benefit students? It gives them an insight into the professional environment and allows them to explore what is available before having to commit. Hopefully, any students taking on a placement within hospitality will see there really is something for everyone, with all skill-sets required at every level. It can be one of the most rewarding and self-satisfying industries out there.

What do you shout about as an ambassador for the industry? I haven’t ‘worked’ a day in the past 10 years! I get paid for doing something that inspires and motivates me naturally on a day-to-day basis. No two days are the same and the excitement and challenges are second to none. Hospitality suits everyone, so the environment is diverse and multicultural, making it a unique experience for all. Hospitality has granted me an Acorn Scholarship and a lead role in a pantomime. It doesn’t get more exciting and diverse than that.

Is there anything that might surprise a jobseeker about hospitality? It’s a real career. There is often negative talk about the longevity and prospects of a career in hospitality, or the poor wages inflicted on junior employees, or the long working hours everyone does to stay afloat. Yes, it is hard work and you must be passionate and driven to succeed, but the opportunities can’t be matched by any other industry. Hospitality allows you to travel the world, explore new cuisines and properties, meet celebrities and high-profile guests and, most importantly, engage with colleagues, who will become more like family. It is the perfect industry for just about everyone. Just wear your smile and bring your personality – we can take care of the rest.
