Make a list of what makes the author feel young and what makes him feel old.
List some of the negative words used by the author in paragraph one and two, e.g. ‘never’.
Write down three things you notice about how this piece was written, for example: ‘The paragraphs are different lengths.’ Do you think the author likes being old? Do you think the title of the blog ‘The Cranky Old Man’ is witty? If you were writing a blog for teenagers, what title would you give it? ‘This author uses a humorous tone in his writing.’ Would you agree or disagree?
Sample for Question 7
I agree that this piece could be considered as having a humorous tone, though one which many adolescents would regard as ‘old people humour’. The author achieves this through contradiction where he states two things that do not agree with each other. ‘My objection to both these living arrangements is there are too many old people in these venues. Mind you, I love old people.’ The author makes a bold statement, which would more than likely upset some people but it is directly followed by a contradictory statement. ‘Mind you, I love old people.’
To me, this shows that the author has a humorous style, which shocks his audience for dramatic effect. This is often used by comedians to try and deliver a more sarcastic and effective performance.
The author also directly mocks himself, ridiculing his own age. ‘I gotta stop writing now; it’s time for my nap.’ He finishes his piece by sharing a personal joke with his readers. He is suggesting he is too old to write for this long without a nap. I believe he makes the reader focus on the stereotyping of old people and makes fun of himself!
Top Tip
When you write your explanation, you should try to give your own personal response. Elaborate with as much detail and opinion as possible. Your explanation should always be the longest part of the answer.
