Setting is a very important element to be familiar with when trying to understand a piece of writing fully. Where do you think this play is set? Why do you think this? Why do you think setting is so important to this story?
Are any of the characters friends?
Why do you think such a diverse (different or distinct from each other) group of children were on the same plane?
Is there any evidence to indicate why their plane has crash-landed? Write down the similarities and differences between the characters of Piggy and Ralph.
Who do you think will be elected leader of the group of boys? Give reasons for your answer.
Persuasive Writing and Emotive Language
The art of persuasive writing involves convincing people of a particular point of view. Often writers and speakers focus on emotive language.
Emotive language is a way of speaking that appeals to our emotions. Ideas can be expressed in a non-emotive manner:
The woman died in the fire.
or they can be expressed in an emotive manner, making the audience really sympathise with your point of view.
The woman suffered horrific third degree burns leading to an agonising death.

Rewrite these non-emotive sentences as emotive statements.
