Register is about the words we use, how formal we are and even how careful we are in pronouncing our words. For example, you speak to your friends in a different way than you would speak to your teacher. Register can range from very formal to very informal, or somewhere in between.

Imagine you are Paddy: you have just come out of prison and you are looking for the local shop. Using the scale below, imagine what kind of register you would use to ask the following people for directions (1 is extremely formal while 10 is extremely informal).
