You have learned many writing and speaking skills in this collection of texts. Now it’s time to Show What You Know!
My Writing Task
You are fundraising for a charitable organisation that is important to you. The organisation needs to raise at least €10,000 as soon as possible to help them purchase essential materials. Your teacher has suggested that you email a number of local businesses to request their assistance. Draft an email to one local business telling them about the cause and outlining exactly what you need.
Success Criteria I must
• Use the appropriate layout for a formal email • Use formal, polite language • Include a relevant sentence in the subject line to explain the purpose of the email
• Outline the reason for the email in the opening paragraph • Provide information about the organisation you are fundraising for
• Conclude by outlining the desired outcome of your email (what I wish to happen)
I should
• Use the RAFT structure • Use persuasive language • Include my contact details • Provide an outline of how the money will be spent • Explain the charity/organisation’s mission statement
I could
• Suggest a meeting with the company if they would like more information
• Offer to include the company logo if they donate money • Mention other people or companies in the community who are supporting the organisation
• Include a quote or testimonial from someone who has benefited from the organisation
Self-Assessment
Re-read what you have written and then write down two things you think you did well and one thing you could improve on.
Redrafting
Reviewing the success criteria again to make sure you have met all the requirements, and taking into account your own self-assessment notes, you can now revise your email to create a second draft. When you are happy with your email, you can put it in your Collection of Texts.
Reflection Note If you choose to place this task into your Collection of Texts now, complete a reflection note. Hint: See the success criteria above to help you.
