to understand genre; to identify elements of the gothic genre What I will learn:
Charlotte Brontë (pictured) was one of three sisters who published poetry and novels during the nineteenth century. As a female writer, Charlotte was forced to publish her work under a pseudonym (an assumed name), as women found it difficult to get their work circulated during this period. Jane Eyre was one of her earliest publications.
Orphaned at a young age, this eponymous character (having the same name as the title of the book; say: eh-pon-eh-mus) is sent into the household of her Aunt Reed at Gateshead and then experiences a cruel establishment at Lowood charity school. Jane Eyre nonetheless manages to overcome her hardship and maintain her integrity. In the following extract, Jane has taken up the post of governess at Thornfield, a castle belonging to the mysterious Mr Rochester. She follows the head of house, Mrs Fairfax, on a tour of the castle.
