Imagine each one of these characters is a plant, a tree or a flower. Decide what each man would be and explain your decision.
Bonaparte makes various statements about Jeremiah Donovan, scattered throughout the story. Quote two of them. What picture of Jeremiah builds up? What sides of his personality show in the killing of Hawkins and Belcher?
In the final paragraph, Bonaparte says that he felt ‘like a child astray in the snow’. To go astray means to take the wrong path or to be lost. Do you understand why he compares himself with a child who has taken the wrong path and is lost in the snow? Why a child? Why lost in the snow?
This story is based on a true incident that happened in Cork during the War of Independence. It is regarded as one of the world’s great anti-war stories. What do you think the story says about war in general?
