In this photograph there are seven evacuee children. Choose one of them and write 180–205 words about your chosen child as if you were a journalist who had interviewed this little boy or girl. Tick off each point in the grid below as you cover it.
Here is an example from a student who remembered to give the children old-fashioned names.
Little Daisy Dobbins looked straight at the man with the camera, clutching the blanket in which Molly, her rag doll, lay asleep. Big sister Rosie stood smiling behind her and little brother Charlie stood shyly at the back. Their tiny house in London had no garden but Mother had told them they were going to a lovely farm in the country with hens and ducks and chickens. Cheerful Rosie, in her brand new hat, saw herself feeding the ducks and collecting eggs in the morning with the farmer’s wife, like in her storybook. But Daisy and Charlie were worried because they were little and still had nightmares. Mother wouldn’t be there to comfort them in the dark and whisper it was all right now.
Checklist for Writing your Article Point
Give the child a name and perhaps an age Say something about what he/she is wearing or holding Imagine what he/she is thinking
Mention the home they are coming from and their image of where they are going Say something about their hopes or fears Add another idea of your own
If you write a good article, you could keep it safely and then return to it at some point in the future to expand it into a good short story for your collection.
