COVER STORY: AZELIS

Masks – A sign of the times?

The global pandemic has pushed consumers to re-evaluate their health and beauty needs with the focus moving to self-care whether that is hand sanitising, personal grooming or rituals such as candle lit at home spa treatments. Stress levels are higher due to quarantine,

financial worries and health fears. This leads to disrupted sleep, inability to concentrate and potential illness which can affect your skin health. Acne breakouts, dark circles and pre- mature signs of ageing are some of the ways stress can manifest itself. Intense stress can also cause flare ups of chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea. The pandemic has also significantly

increased our daily screen time. After working in front of our computer all day, we resort to digital solutions to interact with our families and friends as we often cannot meet up in real life, exposing our skin to the effects of blue light throughout the day. Beauty treatments and routines can become

a refuge from the stresses and strains of daily life. Many also opt to increase their exercise or take up meditation. Using a beauty product can add a moment of “joy” to your otherwise mundane day. Having a beauty routine has given consumers something to focus on and many find keeping a daily self-care routine self-soothing. Masks have long been used as part of

beauty and personal care treatments with examples dating back to ancient Egypt. Driven in popularity more recently by K-beauty and J-Beauty inspired beauty regimes, masks are now a key part of many beauty routines.

concepts to inspire consumers. As the focus moves away from hard to dispose of sheet masks these formulations offer an alternative and feature a range of sustainable and eco- friendly materials: ■ Silver ‘Mask Recovery’ Patches: Using a biodegradable gel base, these innovative gel mask patches have been formulated to help the skin recover from the effects of constant face mask wear. Tests show an increase in skin moisturisation when used regularly. An active derived from Buchu leaves has been used to help improve oily skin, refining enlarged and visible facial pores, mattifying shiny patches and

foaming bubble mask that soothes blemish- prone skin by decreasing redness and irritation while gently removing dead skin cells. Formulated with a mild glutamate-based surfactant and a skin care active containing a powerful mixture of three traditional plants originating from East Asia that are used to deeply target sebum disorders in oily skin. The synergistic combination of these plants has shown a significant reduction of symptoms generated by an acne-prone skin condition. ■ Soothing Purple Clay Mask: A powdered clay mask made with Amazonian Purple clay that can be hydrated easily to create a gentle detoxifying face mask. It contains a skin care active derived from Cornflower flower which is designed to act as skin comfort stabiliser for sensitive and problematic skin. It helps reduce susceptibility to skin redness, skin roughness, and itching. The addition of Oat Flour also helps protect and soothe the skin. ■ Good Night Sleep Mask: Fighting the effects

of constant screen use and broken sleep, this moisturising sleep mask is formulated with a highly sustainable base formulation to help restore the health and integrity of the skin. The sleep mask formulation contains a rich squalane derived from Olives to help restore the health and integrity of the skin. Skin care actives have been added to mitigate the effects of Blue Light and to help reset the key biological functions of the skin and a sequential release moisturising active has been added for immediate and cumulative hydration of the stratum corneum. There is now a mask for every occasion,

whether it is protecting our loved ones or giving ourselves a little self-care in the comfort of our homes. Azelis develops new formulations and

concepts by specifically selecting ingredients that offer the best solutions to meet the expectations of customers and also consumers. With 16 personal care application labs across the world, Azelis’ focus and dedication clearly lie in being an innovative partner to all customers and principals.
