One of the key impacts of the pandemic on the beauty industry was a focusing on the eye area as mask-wearing became mandatory in many public spaces around the world. This obviously has brought much attention to colour

cosmetics, but we should not ignore overall skin health for the eye area, especially as powerful HD cameras on modern laptops seemingly manage to expose every wrinkle on Zoom calls, even when you are not wearing a mask. As the eye area comes into focus, the need

increases for ingredients that offer a consumer- perceivable improvement to the delicate skin around the eye area, and this month we look at a natural complex that eases dark circles, a welcome prospect for the many people complaining of being perpetually tired at the moment. Another interesting development is that

with home working becoming more common, many people have been expressing themselves with their hair styles more creatively. The pressure to be office smart has waned considerably over the past year, and so the ability to try new looks has become more widespread – as has the lockdown boredom to provide the motivation! While being more experimental, consumers have not lost their appetite to use natural formulations wherever possible, which can cause headaches for formulators with some hairstyling formats. The

sheer range of formats is one of the reasons why hair style products offer such a great opportunity for consumers to be creative. Although they all essentially do the same things, the subtle differences allow individuals to display their individuality exactly how they want. In this issue we look at some of the options. As lockdowns begin to end, it will be interesting

to see if traditionally office-safe styles return, or whether 18 months or more of remote working sees an end to restrictive codes of appearance. Which way this goes could have a significant impact on product development in many areas of our industry. In this issue we look also focus on natural waxes,

which of course are a key ingredient in the formulation of natural hair styling products. These ingredients have been used by people for aesthetic purposes for thousands of years and show no sign of exhausting their range of sensory or structurant attributes. Personal Care originally launched for the Asia

Pacific region and you will notice that the back of this issue contains a selection of articles in Mandarin. As a global publication we knew it was important to ensure we maintained the service we have always provided in Asia Pacific and so we will include articles in Mandarin, Japanese and Korean throughout the year. As ever, in this issue we include the latest

industry news and a selection of prototype formulations to get you on the way for your next project. We are currently also working hard on the next Little Book, which will focus on Skin Care, and will be available to readers in just a few weeks. Don’t miss it!
