HAIR CARE

Introducing a new hair care superhero

Dr. Anna Aharoni – Jojoba Desert, Israel

Weather changes, air pollution and hair styling routines can be harsh for the hair. Consumers are looking for more natural hair care products that will restore and rehabilitate their hair without compromising on quality and safety. Accordingly, hair care brands are in the

race to solve common challenges like taming frizz, restoring shine, preventing breakage and protecting the hair from heated styling tools with emphasis on natural and sustainable products to align with market demands. Hair care brands always boast the unique

oil that is incorporated in them, which should enhance the appearance of the hair and give the user added value and unique benefits. There are a variety of oils with good PR that are commonly used in hair care and hair styling products, but there is one oil with such significant properties and benefits for hair as well as skin and scalp, the use of which is almost mandatory - Jojoba oil. Beyond the many benefits attributed

to it like keeping a light feel, improving the appearance of the hair and nourishing the scalp, studies conducted by Jojoba Desert on JD Jojoba Oil (INCI: Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil), present other significant benefits. Jojoba Desert is a leading Jojoba oil

manufacturer and provider, based in the heart of the Israeli desert. Leveraging over 30 years of pioneering spirit, world-class technological advances, agronomic experience and manufacturing expertise, JD provides various Jojoba products to top cosmetics brands, manufacturers, laboratories and distributors worldwide.

The studies focused predominantly on hair

care challenges such as conditioning effect, hair shine and anti-frizz effect, all in comparison with other commonly used oils, such as Argan oil, Hemp Seed oil and Coconut oil. All studies were conducted under the

following conditions: ■ The performance of JD Jojoba Oil was compared to Control shampoo alone and other vegetable oils which are widely used in hair care products. ■ All tresses were washed with 15% SLES and left overnight to dry. Vegetable oils, 5% (by weight of the tress) were applied on dry hair. Dry tresses washed with 15% SLES were used as Control. ■ Eight tresses were used per treatment group to evaluate product performance and to ensure statistical relevance.

Conditioning: measurement of dry combing forces A study was conducted to evaluate conditioning properties via dry combing (Garcia Method) of dry tresses treated with pure oils. Test results (Fig 1) showed a decrease in dry

combing force of approximately 79% measured in JD Jojoba Oil compared to Control treatment. The performance of JD Jojoba Oil was found to

be better than that of Argan and Coconut oil and as good as Hemp Seed oil.

Hair shine performance A study was conducted to measure the increase in hair shine for tresses treated with pure oil using Samba device. As expected, all oil systems showed a noticeable

increase in shine compared to that of Control groups. JD Jojoba Oil (now referred to as ‘JDJO’) showed

comparable benefits to Argan and Hemp Seed oil in this study but showed significantly higher technical shine values when compared to Coconut oil performance.
