Three fruity oils from food side streams
The food industry produces plenty of side streams. Symrise started investigating the full processes some years ago now, from the plant to the product, to identify these by- products and give them a new life. In Turkey, Symrise’s Flavor division is collaborating with a partner in the fruit juice industry. Pomegranates, sourcherries and pumpkins are cultivated in specific areas with optimal weather conditions, for full traceability. When collecting the fruits, the discarded ones not matching the food standards are pressed to make juices. Pomegranate, sourcherry and pumpkin seeds are usually left aside.
Thanks to Symrise’s cross divisional approach, they are able to optimise the processes, separate and clean those seeds. Once dried, they are cold pressed to obtain 3 high value oils that can be used as cosmetic ingredients. With Pomegranate Oil CC,
Sourcherry Oil CC and Pumpkin Oil CA, Symrise fully exploit the
potential of each part of the fruits, optimise processes, value by- products rich in active molecules and reduce waste. Sustainably sourced, these
3 oils can be widely used in cosmetics and show unique compositions, with many benefits for skin and hair. Rich in punicic acid, Pomegranate Oil CC shows
good antioxidant efficacy (in vitro),but will also enhance hair shine (ex vivo). Sourcherry Oil CC has a light
skin feel and gives a glossy finish, it demonstrates also nice antioxidant capacity (in vitro). Pumpkin Oil CA is known to be very suitable for oily skin and will left a soft feeling on the skin.

Preservatives granted approval
Cosphatec, a supplier of natural preservatives to the cosmetics industry, has announced that their raw materials officially comply with NATRUE standards. Cosphatec was accepted as
a NATRUE member in January 2021 and its raw ingredients were declared as conforming to NATRUE standards. The raw ingredients which satisfy the requirements and have been approved are listed in the organisation’s database. NATRUE approval is
particularly advantageous for the manufacturers of the end product. It means that they no longer have to have every raw ingredient in their products tested by the organisation in order to be certified. The raw ingredients already approved by the label are easier to select, making it easier to submit the end product for assessment. Not only is this more customer-friendly, but it also simplifies and accelerates the certification process.
