HAIR STYLING

Ingredients focus: natural and multifunctional styling

Richard Scott – Editor, Personal Care

Hiar styling products were once perhaps the sector least impacted by the surge in natural ingredients, but this has now changed. Consumers in the past accepted that in order to have their hair style fixed in place by gels and mousses, they would need synthetic chemicals to do so. But now, there is a growing desire for styling products to lift their natural and sustainable game. Also, the demand for multifunctional claims

has reached hair styling products. As skin care types of claims have begun moving to hair care, it has been a logical progression for additional claims such as ‘anti-pollution’ to start being listed alongside the more traditional ones. Following is a selection of some of the latest

natural and multifunctional hair styling products from leading global suppliers.

Natural and sustainable styling ingredients As consumers continue to demand natural ingredients in their beauty products, hair styling formulators seek ingredients derived from nature. In styling, natural solutions can be challenging, as they often do not provide the performance of their synthetic counterparts or impart negative aesthetics, such as residue left on the hair that can flake. Styleze CSP polymer, from Ashland, is a nature-derived styling polymer that delivers strong hold, humidity resistance and high stiffness from styling products. Based on cassia seeds, Styleze CSP leaves low to no residue on the hair versus other natural styling polymers. Styleze CSP polymer is nature-derived, with

69% natural origin content and provides high stiffness that adds texture signal from styling gels and creates strong hold. It delivers 24-hr humidity resistance (and outperforms PVP) and leaves low to no residue (outperforms other nature-derived polymers). It delivers clear-in- hand gels, offers good compatibility with other cationic and non-ionic polymers and is easy to remove (by combing or washing). It is listed on China IECIC-CFDA (2015) and is nature-derived according to ISO 16128-2:2017. Styleze CSP polymer is recommended

for use in: styling gels, creams and waxes, pomades, putties, mousses and serums. More and more consumers demand

products that not only make them look great, but are sustainable as well. Baycusan eco E 1001 from Covestro, is part of a new product line of polyurethane ingredients based at least 50 percent on renewable raw materials. It fulfils the requirements for natural origin materials in accordance with ISO standard 16128. This partially bio-based film-former has advantages over other natural film formers, particularly when styling hair with hot devices like flat irons or curlers. While most natural hair products like xanthan gum have poor thermal stability, Baycusan eco E 1000 can withstand temperatures up to 300 °C, providing protection against heat and frizz, as well as offering flexible styling without any residue. Baycusan eco E 1000 (INCI:

Polyurethane-93), was designed to fulfil all the requirements of a modern and high-performing hair fixative agent, including: excellent elasticity for flexible styling without flaking, high humidity resistance for curl retention and superior frizz control, heat protection and conditioning effect for smoothness and hair manageability. Today’s hairstyles require modern styling

products; this is why cream-wax formulations, which deliver a light and natural hold, are in high demand with consumers. KahlEmulsion BE 820, based on Beeswax and Carnauba, is an ideal ingredient to meet the requirements of modern hair care. KahlEmulsion BE 820 is non-sticky and

is easy to apply, offering the ideal balance between a waxy, rich consistency and perfect softness during application. Despite its high solids content (40%), the viscosity of
