50 ANTI-AGEING
Shedding light on the three features of skin’s youthful attractiveness Skin’s apparent age and attractiveness are recognized instantly and intuitively, even within a few seconds. Further scientific in vivo studies were performed to underline the fact that Galdieria can indeed make skin look more youthful and attractive. Scientific literature teaches us that there are
three main features that dictate apparent skin age and attractiveness. These are: ■ Skin texture: A refined skin texture is associated with young and attractive skin. This feature does not only include skin’s topography, e.g. wrinkles, but also its mechanical properties, such as firmness and elasticity, the loss of which is associated with visible skin sagging. ■ Even skin tone: Youthful and attractive skin shows homogeneous and even skin colouration. This too plays a central role in how people are perceived. ■ Skin radiance: A key interest for consumers, with good reason. it transcends skin tone and texture and, as such, is a critical but complex parameter. Skin texture – skin’s mechanical properties Galdieria’s activity against skin sagging
was reported in the aforementioned first impressions study, where the treatment with Galdieria led to a visible reduction of skin sagging around the cheeks and jaws. This was further confirmed in a placebo-controlled study quantifying the firmness and elasticity of skin by making use of a Cutometer (Courage+Khazaka, Germany).
Results An analysis of different parameters obtained with Cutometer shows clearly that the

Skin texture – wrinkles As important as it is to improve skin’s firmness and elasticity, it is at least as important to reduce wrinkles. However, an additional important feature needs to be considered in this context. Consumers understand that improving the firmness and elasticity of the skin,

visibly reducing skin sagging, is something that takes time. Reducing wrinkles is something about which
they tend to be clearly more critical and less patient. Consumers need quick results as far as visibly reducing their wrinkles is concerned. For these reasons, a 14-day placebo-controlled study was performed on 22 volunteers 45 years old and older (twice daily application). An in-depth analysis of the effect of the
test products on wrinkles in the eye area was performed photographically using the ColorFace® technology of Newtone Technologies (France). This technology includes 2D high-resolution standardized photography. For the analysis of wrinkle characteristics, a standard 60 lighting filter (STD60) and cropped images with segmentation were used. From the standardized photographs
and with the technologies of Newtone, wrinkle length (total number of pixels in the morphological skeleton of the area) and wrinkle surface area (total number of pixels in the area) were determined.
Results After only 14 days of treatment with 3% Galdieria, a visible reduction of crow’s feet wrinkles could clearly be observed. The formulation with Galdieria outperformed the corresponding placebo by at least 18 times.

Even skin tone Homogeneity of skin colour constitutes another key skin feature in the perception of someone’s youthfulness, even within the first moments of meeting somebody. Can a skin care product that does not contain any pigments play a positive role in achieving an even skin tone? From our first impressions study it could indeed be concluded that the naïve assessors at least partly based their favorable judgment of the photographs associated with the treatment
