18 INTERVIEW
Day provides a collaborative space to share strategies and insights for navigating these challenges and pushing forward.
TP: How are tariffs affecting the industry? JC: There are parallels to be drawn with the pandemic. If you were a vendor and single- sourced, you weren’t in a great position. For vendors now, if you’re
single-sourced, in a high tariff country, you’re either getting alternate sources or reallocating production, which may be challenging. Of course, things are changing
from day to day and week to week. So what we’ll be talking about at Suppliers’ Day, we will have to see in real time at the event in June.
TP: What else do you see as the hot topics in the beauty industry right now? JC: Sustainability. Skin microbiome. Fermentation. Biotech. These topics will be discussed and on display at Suppliers’ Day. As a global industry, we’re seeing some great innovations from all over the world and it varies from region to region.
TP: Could you give me an example? JC: For sustainability an example is multi-purpose, multi-functional raw materials that provides the labs more options and reduces

the ingredient lists. This is good for the environment and sustainability initiatives.
TP: You mentioned Katonah Chemical, which is a US distribution company you co- founded. What’s new with them? JC: We’re partnering with Haus of Innovation, a raw material innovation company in New Jersey. They’re agile and innovative, and we’ll be their US distributor. It’s a synergistic relationship:
they develop novel, often natural ingredients quickly, and we offer immediate market reach through our distribution network.
TP: Cosmetics is a very competitive industry. What’s the niche with this partnership? JC: Haus of Innovation operates in a unique niche space, characterized by its agility and lack of traditional
red tape in the raw material development process. This allows them to be exceptionally responsive and innovative in creating novel ingredients. For Katonah, this provides us
with a consistent influx of cutting- edge and distinctive raw materials to offer our clients, keeping us at the forefront of the market. Simultaneously, Katonah
offers Haus of Innovation a well-established and efficient distribution network across the US, providing them with immediate access to a broad range of potential customers and streamlining their entry into the American beauty landscape. It’s a direct route for their
innovations to reach brands, allowing those brands to create unique complexes and elevate their product lines with truly differentiated ingredients.
TP: Replacements for synthetics? JC: Yes, with a strong emphasis on an all-natural approach. Haus of Innovation’s core philosophy is to be unique, innovative, and aligned with the growing demand for natural ingredients. Their ability to move quickly in
raw material innovation, coupled with Katonah’s distribution network, will be instrumental in bringing these novel, naturally-derived alternatives to the market efficiently.
TP: Getting back to the NYSCC, your one-year term expires on 31 December. Who will you be handing over to? JC: Anushka Nadkarni, chair-elect. She leads product development and innovation at Bentley Laboratories and has been an active member of NYSCC. Anushka and I have known
each other for several years and we worked together on the Future Chemists Workshop when she was one of our speakers and I was its chair.
What I admire about Anushka is that she is always willing and able to help the chapter in any capacity. She has been a vital asset to this organization and I am excited about her future role as chair. As I complete my term as
71st Chair, I’m proud of how far we’ve come and energized by the momentum we’ve built. I have no doubt Anushka will

build on this foundation, taking NYSCC even further.
