71 East Cork Evens XC Championships, Ballynoe 17th
years XC calendar took place on the 17th
The first event in this of Sep-
tember in Ballynoe. This event really tests the phys- ical and mental strength of athletes but for some, espe- cially the younger ones, it seemed as if they were at a party they were loving it so much. The emotions went from the tension and ex- citement of their very first Cross Country race, to the exhausting and enjoyable feeling of having complet- ed the course. We had an excellent first day out with
some really exciting indi- vidual performances in all age groups. The Girls and Boys U9/10 deserve a spe- cial mention as their smiles even brought the sun out and every single one of them put in fantastic per- formances as the boys team managed to take the silver and the girls team managed an amazing gold medal run for the team. As Joan often says,
keep going right to the line as sometimes you may fin- ish just outside the individ- ual medals, but each finish
has a bearing on the overall team position. Great finish and well done to the young- er members of the club, fantastic running for those who took part for the first time and surely many great days ahead if this meeting was anything to go by. Well done also to the
boys and girls U11/12 teams who were spurred on by the groups before them and went on to claim 2nd and 3rd
respectively. Again,
fantastic display from both groups which is very en- couraging for their futures.
These teams were made up of people who had been through a track season and also those who were com- peting for the first time, so be very proud of yourselves lads, because you all put in a mighty effort. Next up were the girls
and boys U13/14 age groups. In this catego- ry some of these athletes could be considered expe- rienced as they have seen it all before. The boys trio of Eoin Quirke, Diarmuid Healy and Briain Cott did superbly well to take 1st 2nd
, and 3rd . Really amazing
running lads, well done. We only had two girls in this category, well done to Ci- ara Walsh who took 2nd
and
to Elle McManus who was agonisingly close to an indi-
vidual medal. If they had more in their group on the day they would have surely taken a team medal. The girls and boys U15
and U16 were up next and for Helene Marie Vahi and Eirinn Casey it was also a day to remember with re- markable performances to take 5th
and 6th

respective-
ly. The boys had seen all the ages before them and kept the Midleton AC col- ours flying high when Sean Walsh, Kuba Hofft, Patrick Kelly and Darragh O’Sulli- van managed to take 2nd 4th
, 3rd and 5th to claim another
Gold team medal. Remark- able lads, well done. Our final competitor on
the day was Aoife Mitchell who competed in the Girls U/17and U18 (2001/00) and Junior Girls (1998-2001) and she rounded off and amazing day for the club when she finished 3rd and 4th
ensuring
everyone went home happy. On behalf of
the club I would like to thank all the coaches who put in a lot of effort and time but were reward- ed on the day with super results, and to Tommy, Maire Healy, Noel, Maire- ad, Brian and Pauline and whoever else helped out on the day. Remember these events can’t go ahead un- less we have officials so if anyone can spare an hour or two on race days to give a hand just mention it to Joan or any of the com- mittee, it would be greatly appreciated and most wel- come. The Cross-Country
competition day is shorter than TandF, races are run in order, starting with the younger ages of boys and girls and working upwards in age with the eldest age group on last. So once each athlete runs their race, they are finished! Also, all the cross-country compe- titions during October are within a twenty mile radius of Midleton. The “B” Cross-Coun- try Championships are for
athletes who have not won a medal at the respective Championship. All-Ireland XC are only for U/11 up- wards and that is only, if we qualify, either as a club team or as individuals on the Munster and/or Coun- ty Teams. Club League XC Races: We intend to run 6 to
8 league races at training during the XC season. Dis- tances will vary between one lap and four laps de- pending on age and cate- gory. The first league race will be on Tuesday, 12th
of
September, so get the spikes ready!
• Official Attire: when
competing for the club an athlete should wear his/her Midleton AC singlet and black shorts/tights. It is rec- ommended to wear spikes for XC races and best to use 9mm or 12mm spikes. • “It is not about win-
ning but how you run the race that counts.” - Sonia O’Sullivan. •Congratulations
