Report Shows Cork County Council’s Tourism Investment Is Paying Off

by SEAMUS WHELEHAN

Tourism in Cork has

seen a significant uptake in numbers following an aggressive strategy by the local authority to bring visitors to the region. Sharon Corcoran di-

rector of services at the authority’s Economic Development, Enterprise and Tourism directorate revealed the number of holidaymakers has in- creased, following im- proved marketing and in- vestment in local festivals and events. Almost €260,000 was

invested in festivals and events through the au- thority’s Economic De- velopment fund and general Tourism budget, with €42,000 of capital

spent here in East Cork. The authority has

helped fund the fort2fort charity cycle, Ocean to the city Cork Harbour festival, Feast – Cork Food and Drink festival, and the SECAD summer symposium. Ms Corcoran said her

department hope to pro- gress a number of signif- icant projects that have the potential to further boost the districts so- cio-economic growth. In East Cork that plan

includes the Cork Har- bour Greenway, the Mid- leton to Youghal Green- way as well as Youghal to 2020 Youghal to 2020 is de-

signed to re-invigorate the town of Youghal, restore its vibrancy and promote and protect its

heritage for future gener- ations. Ms Corcoran told the

September sitting of Cork County Council on Monday 25 September Cork is perfectly locat- ed at the gateway to two of the Country’s biggest tourist initiatives the Wild Atlantic Way and Ire- lands Ancient East. Nationally Failte Ire-

land invest €3.4 million in marketing a series of festivals and events, how- ever the significant invest- ment the local authority make is often overlooked, commented Ms Corco- ran. Through the implanta-

tion of the county’s tour- ism strategy numbers vis- iting many of the regions tourist attractions are up on last year.

eastcorkjournal Up to the end of Au-

gust 38,651 visited the county’s Fortress Spike Island. With interest in the island attraction soar- ing the local authority have gone to tender for a second ferry in an effort to open up other access points to the island from around the harbour. In the four month peri-

od between May and Au- gust 5,500 visitors passed through Youghal’s Clock gate tower. The authority has also

invested heavily in mar- keting programmes to heighten the profile of the County which it hopes to bear fruit through the vitiscork.ie ringofcork.ie, the Cork Harbour Island brand and Cork County Council Heritage maps.
