September 2017 Midleton’s Community Make its Mark at My Place The Day After Culture Night

by ALAN SHEEHAN & CLAUDIA SHANAHAN O’KEEFFE

The Make Your Mark

community art event held at My Place, Midleton was well supported this past Saturday, 23 September. Organised and run by

Susan Herlihy, proprietor of Crafty Hands Ceram- ic Studio, the Make Your

Mark initiative invited the local community to My Place, Midleton to design and decorate a tile which would be added to an in- stallation that already fea- tured more than 350 other such artworks. Those taking part in the

event were only required to offer a €10 donation to My Place, with the tiles and equipment provided free of charge.

“It was lovely,” said Ms

Herlihy. “We had a lot of people from the commu- nity come in, especially mums with little

kids, to

make their mark with a permanent fixture on the wall. We raised €250 to- wards My Place. The mon- ey raised for My Place is an investment in children, in the community. It is inter- esting to think that the kids painting the tiles will be

the people using the centre when they are teenagers. It is nice knowing they are part of that cycle.” The

day before the

Make Your Mark event saw Ms Herlihy’s ceramic stu- dio at Coach Horse Lane, Midleton, host an event for Culture Night. The Clay- topia event offered live mu- sic, hands on ceramic and pottery work and an exhi- bition of works from local

artists, and was very well supported. “It was an absolutely success,” said Ms

huge

Herlihy. “There was a beautiful atmosphere. We had music – specifical- ly tribal African drums, acoustic guitar and vocals. There wasn’t’ a seat left in the studio. Everybody was very hands on and lots of pottery was made. The exhibition was lovely. The

11 artists were delighted to meet each other and net- work. Because art is such a solo activity, it was espe- cially nice for everybody to meet up and network. It was a fantastic night and we were delighted with it.” Ms Herlihy effused her

thanks for all those involved in making both events suc- cessful. “We’d like to say thanks to everybody who turned

up for Culture Night

event,” said Ms Herlihy, “and participated on the night. It’s simple for any- one to organise an arts or Culture Night event, but without participating art- ists or people attending it is pointless. They are the key to these events. Sincere thanks to all those who par- ticipated and attended to go these two events at the weekend.”
