Carrigtwohill Busi- ness Association is holding its first Business Expo and Family Day next weekend on Sun- day, 8 October. The
and Family Day will be
held at
Business Expo the Car-
rigtwohill Community Centre and will run from 12-6pm. The event, organised
by Carrigtwohill Busi- ness Association (CBA), hopes to combine a fun community-orientated event with an opportu- nity for local businesses to acquaint themselves with those in the com-
munity. The Family Day will kids’ refresh-
feature
ments and activities including face painting and a magician. Live music will be played by a DJ and adults can enjoy a pig on a spit or browse the stalls
from
the local farmers mar- ket, or the local business exhibitors. The day will also feature giveaways of prizes. “The
Business Association is holding a family day and expo,” said Conor McCarthy, Public Rela- tions Officer for CBA, “to allow local busi- nesses to engage with
the local community.
People might know of the business, but they maybe might not know what
it is they do, or
sell, or they might not know about their spe- cial offers. It is an op- portunity for them to put their businesses out there while putting on a big entertainment day for the community. We hope businesses can tap into
that and engage Carrigtwohill
with the local commu- nity.” Approximately 100
exhibitors will attend the event, which will in- clude a large marquee placed at
the commu- nity centre. Businesses
St Colman’s National School, Cloyne Holding Clothes Collection Next Week
by ALAN SHEEHAN St Colman’s National
School, Cloyne is hold- ing a clothing collection this coming Wednesday, 4 October. The fundraiser is or-
ganised by the parents’ association and asks rel- atives of students attend- ing the school as well as others in the community to drop in to the school any clothing or relat- ed items they no longer need. Donations of all clothing types, paired shoes, belts, curtains, bed linens, towels and stuffed animals are accepted and should be dropped off at the school before 9am this Wednesday morning. The collection will be
handled by Lenrec Ltd, with St

receiving money equiva- lent to the total weight in Kilograms of the items donated. The proceeds will go towards purchas- ing games and activities for students’ use during rainy days where
the
weather prevents them going outdoors during break time and the lack of space inside limits the activities available for stu- dents. As the number of stu-
dents attending St Col- man’s NS is outpacing the space available, a portocabin is currently utilised with a second one planned to follow. Each portocabin takes up space in the school- yard, which also limits the games or activities available to students dur- ing break time. While
awaiting the construction of the second portocab- in, one class is currently housed in the school hall which reaffirms the lack of area for pupils to fully assemble or gather dur- ing break times. The PA is running a
letter, email and phone campaign in response to the lack of suitable space available for students at the school. St Colman’s has 304 pupils distributed over 11 classes at the school, with only eight
appropriate-
ly equipped permanent classrooms. Students are forced to use bathrooms in other classrooms or queue for the disabled-ac- cessible bathroom in the corridor, while staff have an inadequate staff room as well as office space.
eastcorkjournal The Board of Man-
agement, Principal and staff have worked to cope with the situation, and procured a grant appli- cation for the school’s expansion. However, as the Department of Edu- cation and Skills current- ly refuse to comply with demands made by Cork County Council to fund on-site parking for staff – an essential component of the works – the exten- sion has been delayed before ground has been broken. For more information
on the upcoming clothes collection or the ongo- ing letter campaign visit the Parents’ Association’s Facebook page at St. Col- man’s NS Parents’ Asso- ciation Cloyne, Co. Cork.
