Leamlara Hall Hosting Coffee Morning and Book Sale in Aid of Renovation Fund
by ALAN SHEEHAN Leamlara Hall will
host a coffee morning and book sale next week on Friday, 6 October to fundraiser for renova- tions. The
coffee morning
and book sale will begin at 9.15am and run un- til 12pm. The proceeds from the event will go towards the renovations of Leamlara community hall. There will also be a
kid’s corner at the event, which will offer compli- mentary tea, coffee and cakes as well as selling home baking and books. “We are raising mon-
ey to renovate the hall,” said Linda O’Brien, member of the Leam- lara Hall Committee and one of the organis- ers of the event. “It is in desperate need of reno-
vation. We will have to do it in stages, there is so much work. The first stage
will be redoing
the floor. We applied for funding from LEADER and that would cover most of the costs, but we still need so much money in the bank.” LEADER, set up in 1991, aims to provide rural communities across the European Union with the resources to ac- tively direct the local de- velopment of their area. The grant can cover up to 75% of the costs, es- timated to be around €25,000, leaving the Leamlara Hall Commit- tee to fundraiser more than €6,000. “The hall is used by
both sides of the com- munity, both Leamlara and Lisgoold,” said Ms O’Brien.
“It is not as used as much as it could

be, but that is because there is so much work to be done to it. It has been here for years. My father-in-law went school there.
to It is close
to people’s hearts and we don’t want to see it go to wreck and ruin. We have a lot of profes- sionals on the committee and we want to make it happen.”
The
Committee
Leamlara Hall will grate-
fully accept any dona- tions of unwanted books in good condition and home
baking for the
fundraiser. Books can be dropped into the Mon- tessori in Leamlara prior to the event, while home baking can be brought to the hall on the morning of the event.
Gortroe Ladies Club Host Successful Fundraisers for Charities
by DENISE FITZGERALD
A very large attend- ance of Gortroe Ladies were present at the Sep-
tember Meeting, which is their last one before the Annual General Meeting which will be held on the Third Thursday in Oc- tober.
A proactive Club, the
members enjoy a host of various social activi- ties and outings together throughout the year, and they are also involved in organising and support- ing fundraising events to help raise monies for lo- cal worthy charities. This year the ladies
held three very successful events which included a Cookery Demonstration by Club members in Gortroe Hall; the sale of beautiful jewellery hand- made by member, Paula Cashman; and an After- noon Tea hosted in The- resa Barry’s Nurseries during the early summer. The
funds raised went
of a Safe for the local ARC Support
for the provision Centre
in Friar Street, Youghal and three Health Care Chairs - one each to Youghal Hospital, Ma- rymount Hospice, and Youghal Hospice. Marian Mariga told The East Cork Jour-
@eastcorkjournal / #eastcorkjournal eastcorkjournal nal that a the elegant
chair (pictured above) provides
health-care
solution for people who require extra care and postural support, focus- ing on the needs of both user and carer, which are central to its design. It provides comfort and support
when sitting,
eating, sleeping or be- ing moved and, with a fully reclining seat back, adjustable
leg-rest posi-
tion, sliding footrest and depth adjusting in-fills, users are certain of ex- ceptional comfort
with
all the postural support they need. Well done to all the
members of Gortroe Ladies Club, a long es- tablished and success- ful group who combine social activities, learn- ing new skills, enjoying weekend breaks, Christ- mas Parties and regular meetings, with their pro- active fundraising events to help benefit local Charities.
Table Quiz Fundraiser in Aid of Youghal Lifeboat Set for October
by ALAN SHEEHAN
Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) will hold
Youghal Royal National a fundraising
table quiz next month on Friday, 13 October. The fundraiser will be
hosted by the Quays Bar, Youghal and begin at 8.30pm. The event will in- clude a raffle and light re- freshments. It will cost €40 for a table of four, with the proceeds going towards the general running costs of Youghal Lifeboat Sta- tion.
“People can just show
up on the night,” said No- reen Varney, a member of the fundraising com- mittee for Youghal RNLI. “It is just a table quiz for the station. We will also have a raffle and refresh- ments; finger food, hope- fully. We’ve been looking at this for a long time. We have been to a couple [ta- ble quiz fundraisers] and thought we should do this. So we
approached one
of the local quizmasters, Brendan Murphy, last year and asked him would he be interested. He said he’d be delighted, so here we
are.” The RNLI provides a 24-hour lifeboat
search
and rescue service to 100 nautical miles out from the coast of the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom, and as a regis- tered charity relies on do- nations and contributions to continue carrying out its work effectively. Youghal has had a lifeboat station for over 165 years and the crews have been awarded six RNLI medals for gal- lantry and currently
the
station operates an inshore B class Atlantic 85 lifeboat.
