September 2017 Sarsfields And UCC Must Meet Again After Drawing On Sunday

Sarsfields 1-15 UCC 0-18

The second quar-

ter-final on Sunday also finished in a draw, with Sarsfields refusing to wilt as they too salvaged a re- play with a late Ray Ryan point giving them a draw in what looked a lot more competitive game than the first one between Erin’s Own and Imokilly. Scores were much hard-

er to get in this contest although Darragh Fitzgib- bon, Jamie Barron and Rob O’Shea were all on target for the students in- side the opening ten min- utes. For Sarsfields Cian

Smith and Eoin Quigley found the range, while Aaron Myres also pointed two frees for the Rivers- town side as the opening quarter finished all square. It was still level at 0-9

apiece at half time with neither side able to get on top. Both defences with Colm Spillane and Conor Gleeson superb for the stu- dents, while Conor O’Sul- livan, Gary Grey and Craig Leahy kept the Sars- fields end up. Jack O’Con- nor and Liam Healy along with Tadgh Óg Murphy and free-taker Aaron

Myres kept Sarsfields in the hunt, while Michael Breen, Rob O’Shea and Anthony Spillane ensured it was still level at the in- terval. On the restart Sars-

fields won a penalty but Jack Barry saved the shot from Aaron Myres before going ahead through Rob O’Shea. While Eoin Quig- ley levelled UCC seemed to raise their game and points from O’Shea, sub Eoin Clifford and Michael Breen edged them ahead as Tadgh Óg Murphy and a massive William Kear- ney strike left Sarsfields trailing by 0-11 to 0-13 at the end of the third quar- ter.

By now UCC with Jamie Barron, Mark

O’Brien, Mark Coleman and Darragh Fitzgibbon all playing well as Cole- man extended the lead to four with two massive long range frees, before Eoin O’Sullivan pulled one back for Sarsfields. Aar- on Myres then converted a free to bring it back to two once more, but just as they had done against Midleton, UCC hit back with points from Darragh Fitzgibbon, Jamie Barron and Rob O’Shea to move five points clear with just five minutes remaining. Sarsfields turned to their bench as Ray Ryan and Gavin O’Loughlin entered the fray with O’Loughlin delivering a long ball in that was finished to the net by Jack O’Connor in

the 58th minute. That goal

was a lifeline and Sars- fields made it a one-point match as Eoin O’Sullivan slotted a free in the 60th minute. UCC were now doing the hanging on and when Conor Gleeson was penalised for a hand pass it looked an easy tap over for O’Sullivan. Instead the sub took a quick free to the well-placed Ray Ryan and he made no mistake to level the scores. From the puckout referee Dave Copps sounded the final whistle and just like the opening game, both sides will have to meet again next Saturday. Sarsfields will probably be the happi- er side as UCC may not be as strong again next week due to club games in other

counties. Sarsfields: J O’Connor
