East Cork Snooker Leone ‘The Boy’ Crowley Looks A Real Prospect

SNOOKER is back on

Leeside and even though the ‘Cork Billiards and Snooker Association’ (CBSA) kicked off their season last Satur- day with the CBSA Cork U14 County snooker cham- pionships held at ‘Shooters Snooker Club’ there

been a flurry of snooker activity at the headquarters of Irish snooker at the ‘Ivy Rooms’ in Carlow involv- ing young Cork players and one new star from Cork on the horizon is Leone ‘The Crowley Boy’ who hails from the Blackpool club. Leone

has just turned

eleven years of age, but already holds a national U12 title along with a Cork county U14 tile he picked up at the tender age of nine years, the youngest in histo- ry to do so and the young man from Dublin Hill has already progressed in the ‘Republic of Ireland Bil- liards and Snooker Associa- tion’ (RIBSA) opening U18 and U21 ranking events this season making it along to the final and semi-final of each event respectively and what is really frightening is that he is eligible to compete in U12, U14, U16, U18, U19 and U21 events this year alone and with a tour- nament break of 83 and a practice break of 100 he isn’t going to be a

walkover for anyone. John Paul Crowley, father

of Leone, said: “He is play- ing the game since he was eight years old and he just looks like a person who was born to play snooker and

has

when I had the snooker club in Blackpool he used to have a lot of table time and now he practices six days a week. In fact I have to haul him away from the table one day a week to get him to take a break, but he loves the game and as long as he contin- ues to love playing snooker Lynda and I will continue to support him all the way.” Leone Crowley makes regu- lar visits to the Whitley Bay snooker

club in Newcas-

tle now where he receives coaching from Paul Ronal- di and has regular practice games with (World 57) Gary Wilson and (World 76) Elliot Slessor and has been under the watchful eye of Roy Barry, so the young Cork player is getting plenty of top class support. Originally it was former

CBSA League winner with Shooters Gary O’Sullivan that

spotted the talented

young player and spend- ing a year at the ‘Shooters Academy’ under the watch- ful eyes of former profes- sional Anthony O’Connor has helped Leone develop the basics and progress to a whole new level. We are no strangers in

Cork to underage snook- er success with the likes of Greg Casey and David Cas- sidy carving the way in In- ternational snooker for the ‘Rebel County’ and pres- ently the unrivalled success of Youghal’s Ross Bulman and Noel Landers and the Crucibles Aaron Hill have shown what is capable from the ‘Real Capital’ and now

The second week of ac-

tion in The Hennesseys Bar Premier Division saw Col- berts Bar welcome Hartys bar

to Ballinacurra. The

home team came through with the victory on a score- line of 8-1. Dan Twomey, Eric O’Donoghue and Mi- chael Byrne had solid dis- plays to ensure the victory. Alan Jones of Colberts and

Donie Kelliher for Hartys had

impressive 100 checkouts on the plus night.

Cathal Cronin picked up a valuable point for Hartys with a strong performance. League leaders Hennesseys Bar travelled to Cloyne to take on The Tower Bar and came away with a hard fought win against the new- ly promoted team. Michael

Mullane, Ashley Walsh and Luke Cullinane had solid victories for the Tower Bar but it was Hennessey’s who took the spoils with Chris Savage and Cormac O’Cal- laghan coming through to get Hennesseys over the line. One of the highlights was a 141 checkout from Tomas Bourke. The Two Mile Inn travelled to Ballycotton to take on McGraths and came away with a 5-4 victory. Neil O’Brien, Paul Leahy had good wins for the visitors while Chris Scanlon and

Ken Morrison fought hard for McGraths In The Long Point Di- vision 1 Central Star travel to Kades Kounty and came out on top 5-4. Good Victo- ries for Daniel Savage and Colin Heaphy helped Cen- tral Star continue their good form. Mark O’Donnell and Barry McCarthy winning for Kades

to get valuable

points for the home team. The Corner House got

their first victory away to Hennesseys “B” on a score- line of 5-4 with strong vic-

tories from Phil Smyth, Paddy Quinn Junior and Dave Hickman gave them a good platform with Adrian Landers and Steve Scully getting valuable points for the home team at the end. The Gaelic Bar Division

2 league had the one fixture with Hickeys Bar travel- ling to Niall McCarthys in Midleton. In a very enjoya- ble match Hickeys ran out victors on a scoreline

of

6-3. Niall McCarthys got off to a strong start leading 2-1 at the first interval with

Andrew Crotty getting the victory. Hickeys then kicked on winning the next three games. Anthony Morley then continued his strong start

to the season with a

win for Niall McCarthys be- fore veteran Stevie Holland got the last game for Hick- eys to get their first game over the line. Fixtures for Friday 29

‘The Boy Crowley’ wants to get in on the act and there is no doubt he will wear an international waistcoat very soon indeed. The Crowley family are

very much part of the fabric of the ‘North Side’ of Cork City with Lynda and John Paul,

plus Nannies, Breeda Crow- ley

and

brothers and sister, Noreen Haynes

all proud as punch of the young man and the family support for an up and com- ing snooker player is crucial. Leone himself just wants

to play snooker, let’s not forget he is just eleven years old and hopes to do well in the game he said “I would love to defend my Irish and Cork titles this year and I love playing on the ‘Star Tables’

because they are

way faster and you have to concentrate much harder, so I love it when we go to New- castle. I would love to be a professional snooker player one day and I am going to play in nearly all the RIBSA

events this year in Carlow and Kildare, so it should be good fun”. Certainly when we look the CBSA U14

back at

championship in next week’s report we can ac- cess how well everyone did, but the standard of under- age snooker in Cork at the moment is

is the envy of

incredible and the country

both South and North and with young players coming through from Cork every year with such potential, that

continue. “I

trend looks certain to love

snooker and I

want to play it all the time and I hope that I will love playing snooker for a lot more years to come,” con- cluded the

who could be destined for many great

game. Meanwhile

(Chairman) Tony Murphy (Secretary/PRO) and Lloyd Myers (Treasurer) and along with the support of the clubs will have another hard years work ahead of them for the 2017/18 sea- son and immediately have a problem to solve in the ‘A’ section, where they at the moment still only have four clubs, whereas the ‘B’ section of Cork snooker is thriving with many teams, so there may have to be a bit of balancing out before the first ball is struck this season. It is not a problem that

the three man committee can’t solve and it might just mean that

the four teams

young player things in the Cork Bil-

liards and Snooker recently held their ‘Annual Gener- al Meeting’ and returned to office are Karl Busteed

play each other four times during the league with the top two teams progressing through to the league final. Either way we are en-

sured of yet another year of top class club season and hopefully a repeat of the Munster snooker club championship double

for

Cork snooker where Crucible

the ‘A’ and ‘B’ sides

lifted both trophies to make a clean sweep in Killarney. Underage

counties that were and club

snooker is vibrant in Cork again this year and where some

once snooker strongholds are now barely able to put one club together, Cork is producing young players into the game and creating a model which is proving to be very successful indeed. With the league now on

the horizon and the first event of the year on Leeside completed, the CBSA U14 championships, the future certainly looks bright. CBSA ‘Tournament Cal-
