A popular East Cork
Walking route is part of a government pledge to invest in our tourism in- frastructure. The Peoples path link-
ing the villages of Rostel- lan to Whitegate is to re- ceive a grant of €8,500 to help maintain the public amenity. The
fund distributed

through the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, has been broadly welcomed by Cllr Michael Hegarty. The Fine Gael Cllr said
he expected the invest- ment in the path to be completed by the end of the year. Despite being within the
development boundary of Lower Aghada and white- gate, the people’s path had failed to attract funding in the local authority’s 2018 foot path programme. Senior Council Officials
had stated they could not justify the investment un- der its urban footpath pro- gramme, which receives
limited funding. “Obviously it’s a very amenity, the
important
People’s Path has great use” but it should come under another funding stream, they said. The
walkway which
stretches for 5km was de- veloped in 1998 through a community initiative with Cork County Council pro- viding partial funding. Over the years local invested
residents had
heavily in maintaining the route, with businesses in the area providing finan- cial support. Dog walkers and local running clubs use the path regularly. Many other clubs including the GAA use the facility for winter training.
In 2016 badly dam-
aged sections of the Peo- ple’s Path Coastal Walk in Rostellan village were re- paired at a cost of €22,000 by the local authority’s Coastal Management unit.
A series of violent
storms had compromised large sections of the pub- lic amenity, with many

is looking for people in the community to be- come involved with the club and help out during its volunteer week, which runs from this Sunday, 1 October until next Sun- day, 8 October. The volunteer week is
an effort by Midleton FC to attract more volunteers to help out across a vari- ety of roles beginning in time for this season. “The
volunteer week
starts Sunday and runs for seven days,” said Mick Kirby, Chairman of Mid- leton FC. “That is when we will be making a big effort with recruiting vol- unteers, asking people to come on board. We want people to say ‘that is the week I should get in- volved’. It is an open invi- tation for people to get in- volved. We have the AGM the following week and we would like to put together the new volunteers for the start of the season so they can work with us for the

people with an interest in the club, said Mr Kirby. “Maybe they have a child playing, or maybe not and they would just like a hob- by or they have a talent. If not and they just want to help out, we will provide training.” Midleton FC has grown
exponentially in the last few years, Mr Kirby said, which necessitates such an influx of volunteers. “A number of positions
have come up as the club has been expanding the last number of years,” said Mick Kirby, Chair- man of Midleton FC. “Our academy has 260 playing members [aged] between five years and ten years. We have 21 teams outside that catering for schoolboys and girls of all ages, senior teams of

adult men and women and we are expanding our Football For
All, which
is for kids with special needs.” There are already close to 100 volunteers at
the
club, but it is hoped that Midleton FC can contin- ue expanding and sur- passing its successes each year.
“We already have a
huge amount of volun- tary people with around 80 people helping out,” said Mr Kirby, “but there is a need for us to expand our structure and we need more volunteers to play a part in developing the club for years ahead. We want to keep expanding and we need volunteers to continuing making us great. We want to be a club for Midleton and East Cork to be proud of.” Those interested in vol-
unteering should email volunteer@midletonfc. com for more informa- tion, or phone Mick at 086 380 7174 or Karina at 086 152 0892.

fearing the resource was in danger of being swept away in a future storm. John Morrissey Chair- man of the Rostellan Development Committee said
his group welcome
any investment in the pub- lic amenity. Although he said the council’s attention to the area’s development
was
less than ideal. “We find it very hard to
get money spent outside the town. We are at
the
loose end of funding de- spite the large rates paid to Cork County Council by businesses like Irving Oil and the ESB.” The Chairman of the
Rostellan Development Committee estimated an
investment
would have the popular walkway looking at
of €40,000 its
best. He said he would hope
the money would be spent on resurfacing the section of route between Rosie’s bar and the Lower Agha- da Tennis club, which is estimated to cost under €10,000.
