51 Dalton Strike Earns Imokilly A Replay Against Erin’s Own

Imokilly 2-19 Erin’s own 3-16

Wasteful, came Imokilly within a whisker

of being knocked out of the Cork senior hurling championship, but a su- perb late pointed free from goalkeeper Declan Dalton gave them a draw against Erin’s Own in a match that they should have wrapped up in Pairc Ui Rinn last Sunday afternoon. On a beautiful day for

hurling, both sides served up what was a dramat- ic encounter, with Erin’s Own holding sway in the opening quarter, but

to 0-9, with Seamie Har- nedy and Niall O’Leary firing over a brace of points each in the closing stages. Up to that

point the a

goal from a Declan Dalton penalty brought Imokilly right back into contention and from being 0-8 to 0-4 in arrears, they went in at the interval leading by 1-7

Imokilly forwards had struggled for scores with goalkeeper Declan Dal- ton pointing their first two scores, while William Leahy added a third from a close in free with Brian Lawton getting their only score from play. In contrast Erin’s Own were much less wasteful and with less possession they had early points from Eoghan Mur- phy and Maurice O’Car- roll, while Robbie O’Flynn and Cian O’Callaghan also found the range for the Caherlag side.

After halftime Imok-

illy continued to add to their wide count (they fin- ished with 15 in total) but they still managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over with points

from Mark

O’Keeffe, Brian Lawton, Will Leahy and Seamie Harnedy, before a superb- ly created goal, finished by sub Brian Mulcahy had Imokilly seven points in front and looking good. At that point Erin’s Own were struggling for scores with only Cian O’Cal- laghan, Eoghan Murphy and Maurice O’Carroll finding the range in the third quarter as Imokilly led by 2-13 to 0-12. Erin’s Own made a few

changes and slowly they worked

their way back

into the game, with a point from sub Stephen Horgan, followed by a goal from Maurice O’Carroll and it was game on again. An-

other sub Alan Bowen then pointed, before O’Carroll made it a one-point game with just ten minutes re- maining. Imokilly were on the ropes but points from Paudie

O’Sullivan

and a long range free from Declan Dalton steadied the ship again. Further points from John Cronin after a strong run and a 4th

from Seamie Harnedy

looked to have Imokil- ly safe once more as they now led by five points with time almost up. Erin’s Own were

from finished and when Robbie

O’Flynn hit

far a

smashing goal in the 60th minute, just

two points

separated the sides once more. Erin’s Own were now applying all the pres- sure and the Imokilly defence cracked again as Eoghan Murphy blast- ed to the net in the 63rd minute and from being in

command, Imokilly were now a point in arrears. Last year Imokilly were caught at the death by Er- in’s Own as history looked to repeat itself but Erin’s Own fluffed two chances to wrap up the win as Eo- ghan Murphy was wide with his first effort from a free, while the second was taken down by goalkeep- er Dalton, who unleashed a mighty drive that saw Seamie Harnedy win pos- session and was fouled. Declan Dalton who was superb throughout made the journey forward and he duly slotted over to earn his

side something that a replay, they cer-

tainly deserved, and had they not been so wasteful Imokilly might

easily

have won this contest. They will meet again this coming Saturday night to see who makes it through to the semi-final.
