Nominations Open for East Cork’s Senior Citizen of the Year Awards

by SEAMUS WHELEHAN

Continued from front page The search is on for East

Cork’s Senior citizen of the year. The

award aims to celebrate the positive

Muintir na Tire contribution our

elderly population make to society by honouring the huge volume of voluntary and caring work many over 55 do in their daily lives, often with little praise or thanks.

Finbarr Motherway and

Annette Lane of Muintir na Tire say the awards of- fer an opportunity to rec- ognise those who dedicate their time and contribute to making East Cork an inclu- sive community, and a great place to live and work. “Many of those over 55

care for members of their own families. Many often overcome huge adversity in their own lives and go on to achieve a great deal for

themselves or their commu- nity.” The

award categories

include Caring award (for someone who cares for another), Community (an individual who enhances the lives of older people), and Challenge (for the person who has overcome illness or adversity, shown bravery or beyond expec- tations).

Deadline for receipt of

nominations is Monday 6th November. Winners will be announced at the Cel- ebrating Age

Afternoon

Tea Dance on Sunday 19 November at the Midleton Park Hotel. The East Cork celebrat- ing Age Week, will take place from Tuesday 14 No- vember to Sunday 19 No- vember across three East Cork locations. The week will highlight and honour the contribu- tion of our older citizens while providing the oppor- tunity for them to connect

and engage with a younger generation. On Tuesday 14 Novem-

ber in Carrignavar Alice Taylor will deliver a key- note address followed by music and dancing with Tim Manley. On Thursday 16 No- vember fun activities

will

take place at Killeagh Hall with the Go For Life team followed by a living herbs for wellbeing talk and danc- ing to Mark Ansboro and Mick Mangan. The week

will culmi-

nate with an afternoon tea dance at the Midleton Park Hotel followed with music to Joe Desmond. Speaking at

the launch

of the positive ageing week yesterday Wednesday 27 September at

Midleton

Library, Cllr Noel Collins said

senior citizens have

served East Cork well. The

Midleton based

councillor said getting old and retiring can fill many with dread but for countless

numbers of East Cork’s el- derly community it’s a time they relish, making time to try new things. “At 100 you can be as

productive mentally as you were at 50 and you should know more. With age we develop insight and per- spective regardless of age. Irrespective of age staying young is as easy as those who live in the

future,

you can do it if you care enough to.”

• Sean Holland with Mai Motherway and Joan Griffin

• Munitir na Tire County secretary Margaret Searson with Tim and Noreen Manley

• Gretta Cronin Carrignavar with Margaret Long Carrigtwohill Community Council
