56 East Cork Aghada Juvenile GAA

Championship Final which is pencilled in for this Satur- day the 30th

by MIKE DALY

Minor Football Championship - Aghada 1-9 v Daurigle Gaels 1-7. Our Minor footballers had a fantastic win after extra time in the Rebel Óg East Championship semi-fi- nal against a spirited Dau- rigle Gaels Team played in desperate weather condi- tions at Brinny last Saturday. We now go ahead to the

venue to be decided. This really was a tight

tense Championship affair with very little between the sides all through. Some ex- cellent

defending and the

wet conditions aided in keep- ing scores at a premium. At half time the score was 4 points a-piece. The second half

ued in the same fashion. Both sides added a goal in the 2nd

half to leave the score at half time at 1-7 a-piece. September at a

The Aghada goal was fin- ished to the net by Marcus Leahy.

Only 2 scores were slotted

over in extra time and thank- fully both of them were in the Aghada direction from Darragh Murphy and Niall Hill frees. An excellent way to close out the game. Fantastic effort from all

contin-

involved on the field and on the line and also to the sup- porters who turned up and braved the weather condi- tions.

WELL DONE ALL AND PLEASE GET BEHIND

U14 Football Championship - Aghada 1-12 v Killeagh Itas 1-6. Our U 14s had a good win in the Championship

at home last Friday evening versus Killeagh Itas. In damp underfoot condi-

tions they were just that bit better on the night against a game Killeagh-Itas side. They opened well in the

first half and at half time held a 6 points to 1 point lead. They

continued in this

vein in the second half and with 10 minutes to go held a 1-11 to 0-5 points lead. The goal came from Eoin Moth- erway with Fintan Cody also tagging on a number of points. However it must be pointed out that most of the scores came from hard work and great running off the

shoulder and support play all over the field from the first 15 and the subs introduced. We slipped a little bit in

the final few minutes of the game and conceded a goal and a point in quick succes- sion but this gives us some- thing to improve on before the next round. Overall a solid Champi- onship display all over from the squad and onwards to the next round. Final score Aghada 1-12

Aghada supporters were certainly smiling in the rain, after safely dispatching Mid- leton to advance to the semi final stages of this year’s In- termediate

Two things stood out on the night – the 1st

championship. was the atro-

cious conditions of wind and rain that continued unabated for the 70 odd minutes. The second was the outstanding performance of Cian Flem- ing in the left corner forward position. The Aghada sharp- shooter finished with 2-4 from play, plus 3 points from dead balls (one of which he earned himself), and ulti- mately he was the difference between two very gutsy out- fits under the lights in Car- rigtwohill. While the wind was blow-

ing 10 minutes were even ste- phen with both sides point- ing twice. Aghada scores came from Fleming and Will Leahy after they had latched onto clearances from Tim Hartnett and Shane Wall respectively. Both these de- fenders were to the fore for Aghada. Midleton led for the 1st

and only time in the con-

test when they had their 1st point from play on 15 min- utes. This was quickly can- celled out by a Fleming ’65 a minute later. Next up Agha- da hit a scoring purple patch. Will Leahy hit a super point from the right wing, before excellent midfielder Stephen O’Keeffe pointed a monster from the puck out. From the next puck out, Aghada again gained possession. Ste- vie Keeffe fed Fleming and when his marker slipped, the pacey corner forward took off towards goal. Despite the pursuit of the Midleton rearguard, he wasn’t going to be caught and at the end of his solo run he riffled home

for a green flag for Agha- da. Midleton steadied the ship somewhat with their 4th point, but Fleming was in the groove now and pointed again from play on 25 min- utes after taking a pass from Pearse O’Neill. John Looney had the final score of the 1st half, when he pointed smart- ly after 1st

marker. Aghada were in a good place at the short whis- tle as they held a 6 point ad- vantage – 1-7 vs 0-4. Midleton pointed a ’65

3 minutes after the restart. Next up though, Fleming and Looney scored similar points after gaining possession and rounding their opponents. 10 minutes gone and Agha- da looked comfortable, but that was about to change as Midleton ran through the Aghada defence for 2 goals in the 10th The

second goal actually goal, the reason for

the 2 minutes between scores was stoppage time for an in- jured player. So now there was just a point between the sides and Aghada needed a

response. They produced it, and how. Fleming caught a long delivery and again spun his man, before unleashing an unstoppable shot to the bottom right hand corner of the net. He followed that up with another fine score from play. A minute later substi- tute Kevin O’Hanlon was fouled and Fleming point- ed the free. On 24 minutes Fleming was fouled when off on another solo run. He again pointed the free, and it seemed Aghada had weath- ered the

resurgence. To their credit the Magpies never stopped battling. They were winning nearly all of the 50/50 balls and anytime there was a ruck, it seemed that a Midle- ton man inevitably emerged with the sliothar. However, they weren’t posing a major threat to the scoreboard. Bil- ly Hennessy was playing very well and put in a good shift for the hour at wing back, while Trevor O’Keeffe

minute of injury time

and all of a sudden there was just a puck of a ball between the sides again. Two more minutes of injury time were played and while Midleton dropped a number of balls into

the danger Aghada defence area, withstood

the pressure and Aghada were both grateful and hap- py when they heard referee Ger Scully finally blow the long whistle. So Aghada are back in

very familiar territory. A 4th semi-final in as many years. This time we face last years All Ireland junior champi- ons, Mayfield. The game is currently fixed for October the 7th
