Aghada Edge Intermediate Thriller In The Rain
Aghada 2-12 Midleton 2-09
Aghada just got the
better of Midleton in this Intermediate
Hurling
quarter-final game played at the Carrigtwohill venue last Saturday night. It has been a horrific few days for Midleton with their Senior, Minor and U21 sides all suffering defeat and now their interest in this year’s Intermediate
grade has
also come to a close. However, this side has
far exceeded expectations and again in the lashing rain they covered them- selves in glory, even in defeat. Aghada had the better of the opening half, thanks in the main to a sec- ond quarter burst and a su- perbly taken goal by Cian Fleming that set the Ros- tellan outfit on their way. With conditions terri-
ble for hurling, both sides managed just two apiece
in the opening quarter, but then Aghada doubled their tally and when Flem- ing raised the first green flag, they had opened a five-point gap. Padraig O’Keefe got one back for Midleton but Fleming and John Looney pointed to leave Aghada with a six- point advantage at the in- terval. The second half had
everything really, excite- ment, tension and goals. Aghada
extended their
lead to seven points follow- ing two early second half scores, whereas Midleton had O’Keefe to thank for
slotting over a great ‘65’ and that score signalled a great comeback by the Magpies. Just as they had done against Na Piarsigh at the same venue, they rattled in two goals in as many minutes with Mi- chael Abernethy and Peter Dowling the
marksmen
and now the margin was down to just a single point. Hard to believe it but
just 30 seconds later Cian Fleming had his second goal of the night for Agha- da and the lead extended to four points once more as Aghada again got on top. Fleming who finished with
2-7 in total added another three points and Aghada looked home and hosed, but Midleton fought back and point by point they whittled the lead back to just three points. In tome added on they had a ‘65’ and when the ball was sent in somehow Aghada man- aged to clear their lines and sealed the deal to set up a semi-final meeting with Mayfield in two weeks’ time. Both sides along with referee Ger Scully are to be complimented on serving up a thrilling encounter at the superb Carrigtwohill pitch, which saw the game
transferred from Killeagh at the last moment. Scorers for Aghada: C
