67 East Cork Soccer Notes

Carrigtwohill United AFC

Date : 17th September Venue: Ballyadam Division 2

Carrigtwohill B 3 V Leeview Athletic 0 Carrigtwohill Utd B con-

tinued their good start to the season with a comfort- able 3-0 victory at home to Leeview on Sunday Morning. Carrigtwohill were able to name a very strong starting 11 and an equally strong bench. For the first ten minutes both teams were competitive and played some good football with the home team having the better of the chances with David Badge Williams being particularly bright and the centre of all good things going forward. Carrigtwohill broke the

deadlock after 24 min- utes with some good work down the right side, Badge played a lovely ball to an open Kevin O’Riordan who brought the ball onto his right foot, opened up his body and curled the ball into the top corner of the goal from a tight angle. Carrigtwohill were play-

ing some really good stuff and looked threatening at every attack. They in- creased their lead after 35 mins when a Badge corner was met with a trademark Shane Kennedy header. Leeview had the ball over the line before

Carrigtwohill started the half slowly but wrapped

up the game on 54 mins with some great work down the left hand side between Shane

Kennedy, Kevin

O’Riordan and Davy Bar- ry who delivered a lovely low cross across the box for Maciek Bezcek who ran into the box and struck the ball over the line. The home team made 4 Chang- es with Dean Salammi and Killian Browne impressing. Darragh Murphy went close at the end and tested the keeper with a good vol- ley but the game finished 3- 0 to carrigtwohill and an all-round great perfor- mance. Man of the Match on the day was the excellent Kalem Deady. Man of the Match:

league win for the lads. With a near full squad avail- able

the boys made light

work of the opposition. There were some notable

performances from both strikers James Mulcahy and Conor Ronayne who has hit his second hat trick of the season. But man of the match was Ethan Daly Harkin who played his first game at centre half and had a very impressive debut in that role. Man of the Match: Ethan Daly Harkin

Carrigtwohill 5 V Riverstown 1 This was a good 3 points

secured at home in a fairly one sided affair. Carrigtwohill had much

the better of the first half even though it was a very scrappy game. Both sides failed to produce any foot- ball of note, but

it was

Carrigtwohill who were stronger in the final third of the pitch compared to the Riverstown. Carrigtwohill were

2-1 up at the break thanks to

goals from the impressive David Rooney and in form striker Conor Ronayne. In the second half Car-

rigtwohill completely dom- inated as there was a big improvement in their pass- ing game. The improved possession and speed of play was rewarded with 3 more goals in the second half from Rooney with his second, and Conor Ron- ayne who added 2 more for his second consecutive hat

trick, his third of the

season. A mention of man of

the match Cormac Flynn who is developing into one of the most complete and composed midfielders at the club, whose consistent performances have

been

huge plus for this side. Player of the Match:

rigtwohill used to play reg- ularly in this age group and had some memorable en- counters at U12 and U13. But then Youghal’s fortunes changed when they were promoted to Division One 2 years ago and the 2 teams went their separate ways. This season, however, has brought these 2 groups of players back together and today’s visit to Ardrath Park had a bit of a family reun- ion feel to it. Youghal of course, were

a bit of an unknown from a soccer viewpoint, hav- ing been relegated back into Division 2, due to the shrinkage

of their squad

midway through the pre- vious season. Back to full strength however, they are essentially a Division One team and it showed on the day. From the start, it was

Carrigtwohill who took the lead, literally in the first minute when a long through ball evaded every- one including the Youghal ‘keeper. This might have raised

morning, but these initial thoughts did not last

hope an easier as

Youghal’s wingers showed the kind of pace they had and put Carrigtwohill on the back foot for the rest of the first half, helped in some measure by a strong wind. Carrigtwohill’s back four

did well, but the two full backs were under pressure run after run and Youghal scored 4 goals from result- ing crosses to make it 4 – 1 at the break. On the other hand, Carrigtwohill were

competing well in the play, particularly in midfield where the recent work in training is clearly paying off.

Towards the end of the

half, Carrigtwohill’s goal keeper produced the save of the

season when he

pushed a ferocious drive onto his crossbar with a one handed fingertip save at full stretch. This drew applause from both side of the pitch! Wind in the back, Car-

rigtwohill took a more of- fensive stance and put pres- sure on Youghal. It was not long before Marvin Ansah turned a cross

from the

right past Youghal’s keeper, only to see his effort saved off the line by a retreat- ing defender. It was only a matter of time however as Carrigtwohill were playing better and better and Evan Donnelly got to the ball first when Adbul Rahim crossed to reduce the score to 4 – 2. In games like this, you

need a bit of luck and it did not smile on Carrigtwohill. The

score remained 4-2

despite all their best efforts over a 30 minute period where they had the better of the play by some mar- gin. In the end, as Car- rigtwohill’s players ran out of steam, Youghal found gaps in the defence and scored two quick goals to put

a distance between

them and their visitors that did not reflect the intensity of the competition in this game. So a bad result, but at

times a good performance from an improving team. This

is after all only the

second game of the sea- son and the two matches played have been against strong opposition. On the day and with their squad at

of the season for the Un- der-12’s started slowly but sparked into life when they conceded 2 goals in two minutes. It must be said both were very soft goals to them to concede – the 1st

Date : 24rd September Venue: Ballyadam Under-10 Carrigtwohill V Springfield Ramblers On a beautiful afternoon

in Ballyadam Park, the lads took on Springfield Ram- blers from Cobh. This was the fourth round of games in the league and the lads are really getting into their stride now with the longer games and new rules. The games

today were

a match for the weather. There were superb passages of play, with some fantastic passing and movement on and off the ball. Both sides did their best to play foot- ball on the deck and enter- tain the onlookers. There was a couple of

outstanding team goals from both sides and the lads were a joy to watch for periods in the games. There was also one or two unbe- lievable

saves today. The from Jack O’Regan after

a great run. Unfortunately, they con-

half-time to leave

themselves a goal behind. Hard as the lads tried

to get the equaliser in the second

was not on their side and as last ditch tackles kept Car- rigtwohill from levelling the score. There is credit due to all the lads for continuing to try until the end. As well as the goal scorers, there is special credit due to Mark McCarthy and to MOTM Robbie Warren for their

boys are learning about the responsibilities of each role in the team and taking on board all the advice from the coaches. The hard work from all the players in at- tacking is easy for all to see but it’s their commitment to winning the ball back and supporting each which is really great to see. The hard work they put in is a credit to them. Both sides today were a

credit to their clubs, fantas- tic respect shown to all in- volved and the day finished up with a nail biting penalty shoot out to cap off a great days football.
