53 Hallissey Points The Way For Eire Óg Win Over Sarsfields

Eire Óg 0-17 Sarsfields 0-7

Eire Óg set up a semi-fi-

nal meeting with Ballincol- lig as the Kevin Hallis- sey inspired Ovens outfit proved far too strong for a Sarsfields outfit that never really got going at a wet and windy Blarney venue last Saturday afternoon. In contrast

Eire Óg

were full of running as they fought for every ball with Eoin O’Shea getting

them off the mark in the 3rd

minute. This was fol-

lowed by the first of Hal- lissey’s ten-point haul as he slotted over from play. Sarsfields were having to work hard at the back as John Cooper and Daniel O’Connor were on top at midfield and with a plen- tiful supply of the ball the Eire Óg forwards took on their men, winning several

free’s which Hallissey con- verted. James Sweeney did get

a point from play for Sars, which was their only score in the opening quarter and a further free from Gavin O’Loughlin was their only reward for the remainder of

the half as Eire Óg

forged clear with Hallissey and O’Shea with his sec- ond point helping Eire Óg to a commanding 0-9 to 0-2 interval lead. Few if any had seen this performance coming and while Eire Óg were superb, Sarsfields on the

other hand were very poor. Two changes were made at the interval with sub Luke Hackett firing over and when Gavin O’Loughlin added another it looked as if Sarsfields might make a game of it. O’Loughlin added another but three quick fire points from Eire Óg with Hallissey, John Cooper and Brian Hur- ley firing over as the sev- en-point

advantage was

restored. Points from Ronan Murphy and a 45th

min-

ute free from O’Loughlin kept Sarsfields afloat, but

they would not score at all in the final quarter as Eire Óg

again took control

with Kevin Hallissey and subs Colm O’Callaghan and Keith Riordan clos- ing out what was a very impressive victory as Eire Óg were comfortable win- ners and full value for the win. Sarsfields were very disappointing on the night where the testing weather conditions were

handled

better by the Eire Óg side with Kevin Hallissey get- ting a ten-point haul that included a side line cut which sets them up nice-

ly for a semi-final tilt with Ballincollig. Eire Óg : K Hallissey 0-10, E O’Shea and K Ri- ordan 0-2 each, C O’Cal- laghan, J Cooper and B Hurley 0-1 each. Sarsfields: G O’Lough-

Douglas Survive Late Midleton Fightback - Premier U21 Hurling Championship

Douglas 2-12 Midleton 1-13

DOUGLAS progress

through to round two of the Cork County U21 PHC with a two point victory last Wednesday night in Carrigtwohill over Midleton who al- most snatched victory at the death. This was a classic of two halves

game

played in wet conditions where Douglas got off to the better start in a domi- nant opening 30 minutes of hurling. In the open- ing three minutes the Douglas side led by five

points following two ear- ly pointed frees from the pin point accurate Diar- muid O’Mahony and a third minute goal from Eoin O’Sullivan who powered down the right wing, then cut in and let fly into the bottom left hand corner of the Mid- leton goal.

sure

Midleton, under pres- conceded

many needless frees in the

opening quarter and were punished every sin- gle time and in the end

that was the difference between the sides. O’Mahony added an-

other of his nine placed ball successes on the seventh minute, before Tommy O’Connell got the ‘Magpies’ on the board a minute later with a welcome point. O’Mahony kept

on slotting over frees and

added another two be- fore the thirteenth min- ute, then O’Connell responded with one for Midleton, but as was the trend O’Mahony sent over two further pointed frees before O’Connell got a long range free for Midleton to leave seven points between the sides on the 18th

minute. Midleton fought back

to within five points to- wards the end of the first half with two un- answered points from Sean O’Meara and Ga- ran Manly, but

Doug-

las again took complete control with a point from play, off Killian Doyle and a speculative

from way out by Liam Dineen

Midleton keeper Alan Power and fell into the net and Douglas led by nine points at

the short

whistle. On the

you had to admire

resumption a

Midleton side that cer- tainly won the second half, restricting Douglas to just four second half

points, and in the end a lucky swing of the hurley could have leton win it

Deady seeing his effort go the wrong side of the post.. Josh Deady, Sean

O’Meara, a brace of points from Padraig O’Brien and four second half pointed frees from Manly put

Midleton

within just five points in the dying minutes and then it got really tense when the late second half substitute Ross O’ Regan found the net

leton through a packed Douglas goal line. With the last ball in

and it could have gone anywhere as the Mid-

seen Mid- with Josh

leton forwards looked to pull off an unlikely comeback victory, but the ball was nursed out wide and on the puck out the final whistle sounded much to the relief of the Douglas contingent who were just hanging on at that stage. Scorers for Douglas: D O’Mahony 0-9f, E O’Sullivan and L Dineen 0-1 each, E O’Brien 0-2, K Doyle 0-1. Midleton: G Manly

0-5f, R O’Regan 1-0, T O’Connell

0-3f, for Mid- S

O’Meara 0-2, J Deady 0-1.
