It will be one year since the opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture this September, and also for the National Gallery of Art’s East Wing. The International Spy Museum will move from its current location to L’Enfant Plaza, between the National Mall and the Southwest Waterfront, in 2018. The new space is 140,000-square feet, more than double the existing building, and will include space for educational program- ing, a lecture hall/theater, and multi-func- tion event space with sweeping views of the city.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is embarking on a 60,000-square foot expansion, fueled by a $50 million gift from Chairman David Rubenstein, that is slated to open in 2018. The expansion will add flexible rehearsal/performance space and a River Pavilion café.
The Museum of the Bible opens November 17, three blocks from the U.S. Capitol. The state-of-the-art 430,000-square foot facility features eight floors of exhibits dedicated to the history, narrative and impact of the Bible, filled with technological advancements, interactive exhibits and artifacts. The museum also houses the 472-seat World Stage Theater.
Food&Drink
DC’s vibrant dining scene is evident throughout its neighborhoods, espe- cially near the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Opened in March, Mike Isabella’s Spanish themed restaurant, Arroz, is located inside the Marriott Marquis, Washington, DC, adjacent to the convention center, and highlights the flavors of Southern Spain and Morocco.
Celebrity chef José Andrés has numerous restaurants within walking dis- tance in Penn Quarter, including Zaytinya, China Chilcano and Jaleo. Also nearby is The Dabney, a Michelin-starred restaurant that recently transformed an existing brick-walled space into a wine bar.
New additions downtown include: Sushi Gakyu, Chef Yoshihisa Ota’s sushi experience; and the Franco-American brasserie, Mirabelle, by for- mer White House chef Frank Ruta and pastry chef Aggie Chin.
