bidding, and, as Akukon’s Ari Lepoluoto explained, the technology brief was equally as transparent. “Basically, in Finland it is not permitted to specify only one named manufacturer,” revealed Ari. “L-Acoustics KIVA was chosen for the main concert hall, and d&b T-series for all other halls. Our electro-acoustic designers defi ned technical requirements and parameters for audio systems. We also took into account the economical mainframe and user routines. In this case, a couple of speakers systems were acceptable, and the fi nal choice was made by competitive bidding. In the main concert hall the offer for L-Acoustics was better than the others, but in the other halls d&b T- series was chosen because variable dispersion was required. This feature is advantageous because of variable stage-auditorium layouts especially in the musical theatre hall.” The L-Acoustics KIVA WST line source system was supplied and installed by system integrator, Starlike. The system is confi gured as front, rear and side sound sources located in the ceiling, fl own on the canopy at a height of approximately 15.5 metres above ground level. Two hangs of nine KIVAs have been fl own from the canopy, providing even coverage for the front audience areas until intersecting with the existing front fi lls. A further two hangs of eight KIVAs are fl own at the same height to cover rear audience areas, while two hangs of six KIVAs at the same height cover the side audience areas. Two vertically mounted SB18i subwoofers behind the front line arrays provide 360° directivity for various applications while minimising low frequency energy on stage. The system is powered by fi ve LA8 amplifi ed controllers. An additional coaxial system of eight L-Acoustics 12XTs, powered by four LA4’s, are used as fl oor monitors and for other point source applications. Starlike’s Pauli Molnár explained why the KIVA system was suited to the application: “The objective was to maintain even SPL and smooth tonal balance for all sections. This led to the choice of speakers with similar physical properties - consistent tonal balance and technology. An L-Acoustics line source system was deemed to be the ideal choice, as the modularity of its curvature ensures excellent homogeneity of coverage, even tonal balance and adequate SPL throughout the audience.” A total of 52 d&b audiotechnik loudspeakers have been installed across the Sibelius Academy Halls. That includes 38 T10’s, four R70’s, two Q7’s, two J-SUBs, two T-SUBs and two Q-SUBs, as well as four M6 monitor wedges. Power comes from D6 and D12 amplifers. Yamaha processing has been chosen for both the main hall and Sibelius Academy Halls. Combinations of Yamaha DME24N and DME64N processors, with ICP1 intelligent control panels, bring networkable mixing capabilities and generous DSP power. DiGiCo mixing consoles also feature throughout. An SD8 has been specifi ed for live mixing in the main hall, together with two MaDiRacks - offering a
