UPSTAIRS
Upstairs is located above the Beresford Hotel in Surrey Hills, Sydney. The venue was recently purchased by new owners Merivale, and CEO Justin Hemmes decided it was about time for a refurbishment. Justin appointed Melbourne-based Andy Mutton of Lightning Light- ing as his Lighting Designer. Andy explained the brief: “The venue has a stage that required lighting and the room needed lighting over the dancefloors and seating areas. The room lighting needed to be flexible, for creating atmosphere and mood, lighting rock bands, and also being able to accentuate dance music on DJ nights. The light- ing fixtures in the room had to be able to move quickly and change colour dynamically.”
Lightning Lighting was contracted to carry out the electrical work for the installation, while the supply and installation of the fixtures fell to ULA. Andy had been using Robe products for a number of years, so when it came to selecting the equipment to fulfill his lighting design at Upstairs, he did not hesitate in turning to Robe once again. Andy chose the new Robin 300 LEDWashes for Upstairs. He’d used its bigger brother the Robin 600 LEDWash on previous occasions, so Andy was already convinced of its capabilities, however, the larger fixtures were not suitable for the five metre headroom at the venue. The Robin 300’s fitted perfectly. He said: “The Robe 300 LEDWash is a great fixture, it has heaps of output and a zoom. The lenses on the head of the 300 show you one colour, you don’t see multi-co- lours, and this was important. Multi-coloured heads detract from the décor and furnishings of the venue. It’s good to see the source and the beam as one colour. It’s way more creative.” There’s no doubt that Andy considers the Robin 300 LEDWash to be one of the best fixtures available on the market today, as he con- tinued with the praise: “The centre circle of one LED is amazing. It used to be we couldn’t get enough light out of a LED fixture, but with the 300 you can program looks with just one LED. I can also make numerous white like a warm white, cool white, steel white, dirty white and a lavender white - a white for every skin tone.” Due to the layout of the room, and its L-shaped stage area, the fixtures have been installed asymmetrically across the room. To accompany the Robin 300 LEDWashes, Andy selected 14 Robin 300E Spots. He said: “Robe also have the Robin 300E Spot, which we chose mainly because of its wide 40º zoom - a function you need in low ceiling venues. This fixture allows you to program half colours and the focus allows you put a hard edge on the colour wheel so the colours split nicely. You don’t find this in all moving spots. Half colour to another half colour is a good chase for live music. The venue is all about live music, so the lights need to complement the beat and changes as best they can.” To complete the lighting design, Andy chose three SDV Pro Giga Strobes. He wanted the strobe effects to have a subtle output, and that was the reason behind selecting the SDV strobes in particular.

He said: “There’s more chop in between flashes with 1,500W.” Andy opted for a High End Systems Road Hog Full Boar to control the fixtures. He took charge of the programming and operating for the opening night, before training the in house lighting operator on the Full Boar. The Road Hog Full Boar is equipped with the Flying Pig Systems renowned Wholehog software, which allows the lighting operator to create, manage, edit and playback lighting accordingly - to match the music - whether it’s provided by a live act or a DJ. Andy said of the console choice: “We wanted a console that operators like to use when they’re busking and playing on the fly. It’s also compact and easy to move around the venue if required.” Andy is confident that he provided a suitable, flexible, and innova- tive lighting design for Upstairs. He summed up: “The interior of the venue looks amazing and the lighting strived to accentuate the room. Thanks to Joel Klinger from Electra Tec who was instrumental in the electrical work for the lighting installation. ULA who delivered on time and were flexible when the installation demanded some time line changes.” Merivale AV Manager, Joe Caruso was in charge of the selecting the audio system at Upstairs. The layout of the venue - with its spacious stage and tiered booth viewing area - meant Upstairs needed a flex- ible audio solution. Joe selected a d&b audiotechnik sound system to fulfill the requirement. The main system comprises six d&b Qi1 loud- speakers and two d&b Qi7 loudspeakers, accompanied by Qi-SUB and E115X subwoofers. The system is powered by a combination of D6 and D12 amplifiers, and control is supplied by an Avid VENUE SC48 mixing console. The sound reaches every surface in the venue from the stage to the furthest lounge, thus providing even coverage for every audience member.
