KOBA SEOUL


The 21st Korea International Broadcast, Audio & Lighting Equipment Show (KOBA) took place on 14-17 June at the COEX exhibition centre in Seoul. A total of 603 companies from 33 countries brought the world of new media in broadcast- ing, lighting and audio to the four day event. The show was fairly busy for the duration, particularly the last day, which is normally the quietest day of any tradeshow. Visitor figures totalled 40,807 overall, peaking on the third day at 11,594, with the final day falling just 400 short of that. Like many tradeshows in Asia, audio demonstrations were permitted on the show floor, however, organisers, Korea E & EX Inc. and The Korean Broadcast Engi- neers & Technicians Association had full control, so the demos were not too intru- sive. The organisers also did well when it came to signage, with all aisles clearly

marked. Over the past couple of years when cuts have been made at tradeshows, signage has often suffered, so to see it done well again is a sign of positive times. Perhaps one of the most useful aspects I saw implemented by the organisers was the Expo Card Reader. This allowed visitors to self-scan their badge at any stand that was of particular interest to them. Upon scanning, visitors gave their contact details to the company, and registered their interest. Once scanned they are able to collect catalogues from the exhibitor. Having never seen these before (although I’ve no idea why, considering how many tradeshows I get to), I was truly impressed with this concept, and I think it would be a great addition to every tradeshow. On the show floor, the broadcast section attracted the most attention, rightly so, having the largest amount of exhibitors, totalling 243. This was closely followed by
