FRANCE’S SPECTACULAR NATIONAL STADIUM RECENTLY UNDERWENT A MAJOR AUDIO OVERHAUL INCLUDING THE INSTALLATION OF MORE THAN 300 NEXO LOUDSPEAKERS AND SUBWOOFERS AND AN AUVITRAN NETWORKING BACKBONE. PAUL WATSON REPORTS.
decided to change the sound system two years ago, we weren’t so confident in getting the contract. “However, we did, and it’s been a different story, because Melpomen handled the installation entirely on their own, allowing us to do what we do best: designing and manufacturing the speaker cabinets!” Deffarges explained that the Stade de France is a Private Public Part- nership, which means it is public-owned, but is operated by a venture of three construction companies, and it’s the job of those companies to ensure the stadium is kept in tip-top condition. “The sound system was running perfectly for 15 years, but it was time for a change. Having to install the system ourselves the first time meant we at Nexo had an improved knowledge that we were able to capitalise on,” continued Deffarges. “I checked the acoustic design, of course, but it was [Melpomen’s MD] Thierry Trenchant and his team that took the job on. They did all of the readings and we basically supported them. Not only did we have the know-how the second time
round, but also the network of companies which were capable of do- ing a great job.”
The Stade de France is a particularly flexible purpose-built stadium. Its unique floating roof never touches the stands (it rests on 18 pillars instead), and a cushion of air allows the lower stands to slide out in around 72 hours, which means the stadium is easily reconfigurable for athletics events or major concerts.
The brief for the Stade de France installation was to provide top qual- ity audio and the best possible intelligibility for any potential stadium configuration, whilst conforming to stringent security standards. This meant the system would need to provide full control of the audio throughout the stadium (and from the control room), a permanent audio level measurement in and out of the arena, and full redundancy. Melpomen’s Project Manager, Sylvain Brottes, coordinated the design and installation of a 13-zone audio system through an optical fibre ring system that circles the stadium at roof level, covering the high
