(top tier / roof), medium (second tier), low (fi rst tier), and pitch levels. Also, internal rooms such as VIP lodges and space for journalists, restaurants, and parvis (the entrance around the stadium) had to be catered for. All audio is connected and controlled via an EtherSound network.
Nexo provided 292 GEO S12 loudspeakers and 27 RS18’s for the main arena - this is the fi rst time the manufacturer has put its RS18 sub-bass units into a sports stadium install. A total of 40 clusters of Nexo cabinets are fl own from the roof; seven S12’s are directed at the upper levels, and a separate array of six S12’s point down the lower levels. A further 32 S12’s are used for fi ll at ground level, and the RS18’s are all fl own.
The Nexo line array system is powered by Nexo NXAmps. As the NXAmp is an EtherSound amplifi er, any input can now be sent to any output at the Stade de France. Messages to specifi c areas of the grandstand, or public announcements for the car parks, are typical examples. Connectivity is via fi bre optic cable which runs from 11 Yamaha SB168-ES stageboxes. In total, 10km of cable have been installed in a ring architecture which has saved a massive amount of cabling for the installation team.
The status of the NXAmps can be monitored in real time through the AuviTran AVNF49-ES devices. Signal is sent from the NXAmps via a Melpomen-designed power switching box to the speaker clusters. The combination of the NXAmps and AVF49-ES provides a unique supervision feature: the NXAmps are equipped with GPIs and GPOs, so they can communicate with each other in that way for various actions. AuviTran’s co-founder Jeremie Weber believes that the system’s fl ex- ibility, interoperability and monitoring, and minimum latency are some of its major advantages.
“Although there are less than 20 AuviTran units in the stadium (one
AVM500 and one AVNF49 unit in each of the nine racks for the fi bre optic safety ring control and management), the network offers matrix capability of 320x320, and the Stade is currently using around half of that capacity,” he explained. “With AVNF49-ES units monitoring the amplifi ers in the racks, if one blows up, the system immediately switches to another one. Every device is continually monitored: if anybody unplugs anything in the stadium, it will immediately show on the screen in the control room.”
A total of 32 NXAmps are located in nine amplifi er rooms within the stadium roof, which provide all diagnostic information to the control room; and an additional eight NXAmps are used to control a separate PA system for the stadium plaza, the stadium’s surrounding areas, which is equipped with Nexo GEO S8 compact line array modules. “We needed to have a system for security and for playing music, so in fact we have two systems - one for the main arena and one for the rest,” said Melpomen’s Thierry Trenchant. “We work with the software to control the two; for example, we can put mics in place using the Yamaha stageboxes - everything is programmable within the software from the Yamaha MC7L-ES console situated in the control room. We can also send signal for TV out of the desk.” Nexo and AuviTran have collaborated on French stadia projects before, but 2010 also saw the two companies carry out installations together in Moroccan stadiums - Stadium of Marrakech and Stadium of Tanger - building their working relationship further. “Our speakers can reach an SPL of 104 to 106dBA, which is per- fect, because you typically want to be about 20dB above the average background noise,” said Deffarges. “And AuviTran is such a fantastic partner to work with; together, we were able to deliver an extremely effi cient and reliable monitor system and remote control system, as well as making it intelligible and, of course, very powerful.”
