COMPANY: MEDIALAS
Can you give us a brief background of your company? MediaLas has always been the pacemaker of the laser industry. Many MediaLas inventions led to new products or even markets, for example, the legendary SpookyBlue, the world’s first real laser projector with full DMX control. Also, the legendary CATWEAZLE scanners, [which we feel] invented an entire new market segment. Back in 1999, MediaLas was the first company worldwide, which offered a realtime video sequence tracing system for laser applications, the VST software. As of today, MediaLas offers high quality and unique laser projectors for professionals, innova- tive laser software, and highly productive tools for creating stunning laser shows.
In what type of applications are we likely to see your products? MediaLas has always supported a wide variety of laser users, such as cruise ships, nightclubs, rental companies, bowling centres, or recreation areas. With thousands of components sold and software licenses, it is very likely that you can see a MediaLas product anywhere on the planet!
What is your best selling product? Why do you think that is? Top sellers include our famous Mamba software, with a few thousand copies sold to market, our MicroAmp galvo drivers with more than 10,000 pieces built, and many different laser projectors, such as the AttaXX series.
Is it important to strike a balance between power and safety? With the flooding of the market, the risks of seeing a real laser accident, has risen dramatically. Any user can buy a class 4 laser for nothing. The biggest risks today, are the blue 445nm diodes, which have become unbe- lievably cheap, but very powerful. If somebody shines a 1W blue laser right into a human eye, it can be very dangerous indeed. Laser safety rules and regulations are here, but it is very important to follow these rules.
Does laser law and guidance differ from one country to the next? How do you address that with product specifications? No, in principle, the same laser regulations and rules are valid for the entire planet. It is the IEC 60825, the EN 60825 for Europe, and the VDE 0837 for Germany. Unfortunately, in some countries, nobody is following these regulations, so the use of high power laser light is still open to eve- rybody. I predict, one day we will read about a terrible accident, in which people lose their eye sight, all because nobody followed the international regulations. This will affect the entire industry.
What does the future hold for show lasers? And for your company? At this moment, MediaLas is in really good shape. We are still growing, new innovations are on the way, and we will bring new products to the market, to improve laser show quality, as we have done in the past. If you follow the software market, our Mamba software sets new standards. Imagine, a world leading laser software company, which claims to have come up with a new software system and new features, which have been standard in Mamba for more than five years. We do not understand how someone can call these features ‘new’, while for MediaLas, it is an old hat. But this kicks our asses, and helps us to come up with new standards.
What do you think lasers add to a show or performance? Laser is still a very unique light, and no other light comes close. Unfor- tunately, the exclusivity of a good laser show has been disturbed by the sheer amount of extremely cheap laser effects, which flood the market. Once you watch a MediaLas show, you will see the difference. With this high impact entertainment, a good laser show is still a highlight in any venue.
