PROJECT A STEP BEYOND

Company: Pangolin Location: Various

For years, performing laserists have been creating their shows using Pangolin’s LD2000. Since it’s release in 1999, LD2000 has been the most heavily awarded, highest selling professional laser controller on the market. In fact, many of the world’s best laser light shows were created using the LD2000 software. LD2000 has been used in major entertainment venues like Disney, Carnival Cruise Lines, and Universal Studios, at major sporting events like the Super Bowl and 2008 Olympic Games, and by many high profile musical groups like the Black Eyed Peas, Madonna, Linking Park, the MUSE, Coldplay, and many more. In 2011, as Pangolin celebrated its 25th anniversary, the company made a con- scious decision to release a new software development that it has been working on for the past five years. Something it believes believe will take the laser industry beyond anything it has ever known. On 16 July, to commemorate the 42nd year an- niversary of the Apollo 11 Mission to the Moon, Pangolin officially launched Beyond. Pangolin chose this date to honour William Benner Sr. a certified NASA technician who worked on the Apollo 11 Mission, and father to William Benner Jr. the primary

developer of Beyond and Pangolin’s President and CTO. Beyond takes laser light show design to a whole new level. Pangolin took a unique approach to the development of this software, combining the power and functional- ity that professionals came to expect from LD2000, with an easy to use user-inter- face and features that will allows you to create complex, professional caliber laser shows faster and easier than ever before. In a recent interview, Pangolin President and CTO William Benner Jr. said: “This is an exciting time for us here at Pangolin. We have a passion for laser entertainment, and are looking forward to seeing what our users create in Beyond. The industry as a whole is going into new directions, and Beyond is a reflection of this. Beyond takes a whole new approach to laser light show design, and just goes to show everyone that lasers are here to stay.” Pangolin is continuing the development of Beyond, and more software advance- ments will be on their way soon to come.

COMPANY: Pangol in

Can you give us a brief background of your company? Since 1986, Pangolin has been developing software and hardware for the laser entertainment industry. Currently Pangolin is the world’s largest manufacturer of laser software and control hardware. For the past 25 years, our focus has been on creating innovative ways for laser operators to design, control, and implement their shows. Since our beginning, Pangolin Systems have helped contribute to over 350 International Laser Display Awards (ILDA) for our clients. In addition to the manufacturing side of our business, we are also actively in- volved in the promotion of the laser industry as a whole. Our President and CTO, Mr. William Benner Jr. has been active in the laser display community since 1985. In addition to his current role at Pangolin, he also served for five years as a member on the Board of Directors for the International Laser Display Associa- tion (ILDA) as well as serving for seven years as ILDA’s Technical Committee Chairman. Pangolin also takes a very strong stance on the avocation of laser safety. We have published articles in the Laserist magazine, explaining how to make laser shows safer for people in the audience and in addition we have designed many features within our products to further ensure the safety of laser light shows.

What do you think lasers add to a show or performance?

Lasers add that wow factor. They are one of those really dramatic special ef- fects that capture people’s attention in surreal type of way. Lasers cut through the air like nothing else, and in many cases, when performing audience scan- ning, you can even reach out and touch the people in the audience using the laser beam. Another great thing about lasers is how versatile a medium they are. You have an entire pallet of colour at your disposal, and can combine beam effects, graphics, text and 3D animation to create something truly special. I can not think of another special effect that allows for this degree of versatility. It is truly something amazing.

What does the future hold for show lasers? And for your company? We at Pangolin are excited for the future. Year after year we are seeing contin- ued growth in the industry, and lasers are becoming more affordable and are being used by more and more people around the world as a way to add that wow factor to their events. We are going to continue to innovate. To find new and better ways for laser operators to create, control and implement their laser shows. Beyond is a step in that direction, and we are excited to see what will be created in this new platform. www.pangolin.com
